how can i download the android apps (from android market place) to my pc and then transfer to my phone to install? i clicked on download and it showed my phone. i assume it'll download straight to my phone.
 
Correct. You're not supposed to download apps from the Market to a PC. They go straight to the phone.

Once installed on your phone you can make a backup on your SD card with e.g. the app BackupEverything, and then copy that from your phone/SD card to your PC or Mac for a second-tier backup.
If worst came to the worst and you would have to reset to factory settings you could then copy it back from your PC or Mac to your phone/SD card and then restore that backup file to your phone.
 
You would also need tge phone connected to the internet, either via wifi or mobile internet, for tge download to proceed.
