Help Downloaded photos disappear???

If I download a photo from a text message, it goes into the Downloads folder of the gallery, then anywhere from an hour to maybe a day later, it's gone! There is a just a black square with a triangle and a ! in its spot. What's the deal?

Update: Found out if I clear my cache and history, they are gone. There has gotta be a better way to save them.

Try 'Save MMS', free in Market/Play Store.
It saves the text's pics to the SD card

It hasn't happened with my downloaded photos, but the ones I saved to the SD card from the camera disappeared today. No black squares or triangles, they just disappeared. Well all of them except 3. I don't know what was special about those three.
