Downloading and Installing Upgrade As I type

robo21

Android Expert
I just connected to Mini Kies and it says Upgrade available! I'm downloading now. Will advise.

You realize if you're the first one to try this your phone will explode. :D

LMAO I'm prepared, I look like the dude from Hurt Locker ;) And it went smoothly... very smoothly.

Anyone using Mini Kies, be patient: The "S" logo remains on screen for what seems like minutes while the phone updates after it downloads and reboots.

So?.. How is it? Faster? GPS? Mobile AP? More/less bloat? Is it KA6?

Everyone's waiting to hear...

It feels great. It is KA6. It does erase all widgets but the apps remain. There seem to be numerous improvements on all fronts. For instance, the dialer now has improved functionality for adding waits and pauses on the dialing screen uner settings. There doesn't seem to be much bloatware. There is Tmo TV now. The Android keyboard is gone but Swype has added a voice input feature. The voice input may have been there since the last update but I didn't use Swype so I'm not sure. GPS seems to be the same as before with my new, warranty replacement Vibrant - excellent.

I'm working so this is about all I've had time to get into.

mic on Swype is not new.
Lots of complaints on XDA about no android KB and still crappy GPS.
Kies update is JA6, but now JA7 has already leaked.

The GPS on mine works the same as I previously reported under 2.1 and but this is a warranty exchange newer build phone (10/20/10) and the GPS worked great from when I received it last year.

Hey robo, how do you figure out if your Vibrant is a new build phone? Curious about that since my GPS can get wonky sometimes.

My old phone with a build date of 7/10/10 was replaced under warranty replacement for haptic buttons that stopped working. The replacement came in a new, retail, factory sealed package. The build date on the box was 10/20/10.

The GPS was quick locking with more sats and accurate. I would say that anything after mid-October should be good. The Tmo rep seemed very confident that the phone I was getting would not have GPS problems.

Something that I've been sorely missing since I got the Vibrant is an audible Bluetooth connect/disconnect notification. Finally! 2.2 has this built in. ;)

With the froyo roms you can also voice dial from your bluetooth.
either from speaking the name of the contact ("Call Robo") or dial a number ("Dial 5551212")

I missed this with Androids 2.1 and lower

Thanks for that Big Dog. Is there anything else you have noticed with Froyo? I don't want to miss out on any goodies... ;)

since i am running a custom rom i am not too familiar with what you might have with the "Official Up-Date" compared to mine. some other things that are different form ANDROID 2.1 in my rom (M - Flagship V2 - Einherjar Dev Team) is Mobile AP, USB Tethering (Never used these 2 yet), the shortcut to the external SD card is no longer shown as SD, now it is external_sd. When you take pictures or videos it no longer goes into DCIM/Photos, Now it goes into DCIM/Camera.

Other than these things I have seen no difference in features but this could be do to the fact i am not a dev and do not get deep into the entire phones workings.

Standard things like music player, camera,Gallery,Contacts,e-mail,Calender, .... All seem to me to be the same as before.

The one thing I did notice that I use regularly is the Stock Browser that comes with my current rom as well as other 2.2 roms i flashed before, You can only have 4 tabs or windows max. Android 2.1 Stock allowed 8.

So now I use Miren Browser and absolutely love it. Best Browser in my opinion.

Also it is noticeably smother through the menu navigations.
GPS is the same for me but I always had good GPS from the start.

If i can think of anything else i will post.

I really like the new calendar widget...they added the market widget too, unless that was there too....haha

One thing I thought was really cool was the notification get's a blended translucent green color if you go home during a call. Really cool! I mean, now I know I am on a phone call for sure besides the icon.

I wonder if this is T-Mobile's direction, but the visual voicemail needs to utilize that proximity sensor. Nothing like the cheek touching something else while trying to listen to a voicemail.

I really like the new enhancements to Gmail and having quick short cuts to reply to people that flow with the scroll down the page, along the top.

I like T-Mobile TV, it seems like a great addition. Now I can brag to my dad that he isn't the only one with Sprint TV capabilities.

Pinch-to-Zoom on the homescreen. I read somewhere that Samsung has a name for this, I read it, but I have forgotten it already. But basically, you pinch to zoom on the homescreen and it will zoom out to your homescreens in a circular fashion, to which you can select the screen you want with a touch.

Some new interesting live wallpapers.

Oh, I didn't see this mentioned, MobileAP! yeah, that's the $^#%!
I have skimmed the T-Mobile site pretty thoroughly and don't see except one reference to a charge, that was back in November, stating the $14.99 charge. I wasn't prompted anything when starting it, nor is there anything currently on their sites that state the feature needs to be purchased.

Internet and E-mai: T-Mobile Web

But when you click to the forums link they have which is:

Phone as Modem / Tether FAQ's - T-Mobile Community

"
Requirements

To use a phone as a modem, you must have:

  • a 3g or HSPA+ device
  • an Unlimited Web feature that costs $19.95 or higher
  • a Tethering & Wi-Fi Sharing Feature"

It doesn't say a sharing plan, but a sharing feature, inherently that would mean a phone capable. Well, our phones are capable, the phone granted, isn't listed yet. But none of the android links I clicked mention anything about extra charge. Enjoy while you can I suppose, I'm still watching my bill closely. I like it, will come in handy. Thanks for that feature, my favorite of them all, and much waited by me, as a weather spotter.

The new 3d maps, already looked at KC, awesome!

WiFi calling of course.

I think I have ran out of things to say that wasn't said on this thread already, sorry if I repeated, I tried to proof read.

Oh yeah, the google search more integrated across the phone instead of just web, at least for the widget yeah.

And finally, the contacts, the groups work correctly now, utilized Google's Groups. I have deleted the ones already that were never used, added by phone. Great addition!

Ok, yeah, I'm done now....

I just literally noticed this. I have been using the power control widget...

Well the brightness, I had three different clicks through it. I don't know what the different modes necessarily meant, except to me, the lowest dimmest setting, a medium, and full bright.

This new power control widget now has 4 clicks through. The last one changes to auto and the indicator on the widget adds an "A" on the light indicator. That's pretty neat to me, saves some clicking through to some settings or putting shortcuts/folders on the homescreen, that is to ensure that I am truly on auto.

One feature after another for me lol

The apps have the pinch-to-zoom out homescreen flyover is what some call it, some say home screen, I like homescreen. There is another name I'm still investigating where I saw it, going through google archives of my searches LMAO.

Samsung calls it "Leap"

That's the stuff right there! I remember my old Beat I could use the bluetooth to initiate voice commands, that is awesome!!!! Going to try with navigation now :D

NM, don't work :(

Okay, the factory reset cured the GPS "issue" I was having post update to Froyo. The accuracy is back and it locks immediately plus it's locking on 7-9 satellites. :D

Bluetooth will work for voice dialing only as far as I can tell. Other voice commands are available through the Vibrant's own mic.

I don't know exactly what model this headset is to be exact, but the dialog says 520Plantronics when connecting.

If I press and hold the connect button the headset for a period to get a tone, it activates the voice command, a voice comes through the headset and says speak now, but you have to probably wait an extra second after that as it hasn't worked right off the bat.

It gives suggestions on things to say, but so far, the example as in Open Calendar, only prompts my phone to call some random number it thinks. So not sure about the ability to fix this but it could use some enhancement there. It'd be nice to be able to use it to say, navigate to you know, but that doesn't work. I even tried open navigation, that didn't work. I didn't try open calendar though, hmmmm :D

My Motorola headset popped up the voice window once, then after that holding the "connect button" only redials the last call. :(

Hmmm I don't know how your Motorola works.

My headset, if I click it briefly, it gives me a chirp, usually to indicate the connection of an incoming call. If I hold it for about a second or two, I get a lower tone, and then I let go and then the phone works. If I continue to hold it will turn my headset off. Nothing like that for you?

Mine is a $24 Jabra from wallmart about 2 years old.
The way mine works is when I long Press and release when it beeps I get the "Speak Now" prompt.
When I short press or click, Nothing happens.
When I double click it dials the last number called.
When I long long press turns it off.

Seems that different ear pieces do different things.

Ah, I might want to try the double click myself now. Never thought about the redial option.
