DRM Notification - License Required

Anyone know what the DRM notification is about?

I've read other forums talking about when connected to your computer or because of software programs or music or videos.. But I don't have any music or videos. I have gotten this notice twice today and I wasn't even connect to my computer and I have not downloaded one single song or video nor have I copied any to my phone.

How can I tell what program is causing this issue?

Digital rights management
It means some provider you are linked to believes you are improperly trying to access material they have the right for.
It covers both hardware and software.

Could be your phone itself.
A copy of the message would be helpful - just guessing at this point.

There is no copy of the message or notification rather.

It literally just says DRM notification license required. If I touch the screen to read the notifcation it just disappears and it's gone. It has a little picture of an envelope with the @ symbol over it. But it is not in my messages it's just a notification like when you install an app and it says successfully installed.

It has happened on two different days now at random times. on both occasions there were two of the exact same notification. It literally says:

DRM Notification
License Required

I already know it's digital rights management. I just don't know from what or why. I wasn't even running a program. My phone was just sitting on my desk. I had not even really touched it today. It must be one of the apps I have installed is trying to access something and it's giving me this message. It would just be nice to know which one so I could get rid of it.

I did a few google searchs and it looks like alot of people are seeing it when they connect their phones to their computer. For me it just happened and I was not doing anything.
I'm guessing I have an app installed and it is trying to connect or contact someone or something and subsequently I'm getting this notification because of it. I just don't have any way to know which app could be causing it and I don't really have a history of it either because the notifications disappear when you try to touch one of them.

It suddenly started happening to me when I flashed the previous version of my current ROM. I did a search here and found a post suggesting deleting all files with names containing "drm" (there are two of them; one starts with DRM and the other has it buried in the middle of the filename). Did that and it worked.

I also tried fixing permissions but that didn't seem to help.

Edited to add: My memory was a bit off - it's two things you need to freeze in Titanium. Here's a link: http://androidforums.com/samsung-fascinate/276916-what-drm-notification.html
I am not sure what you could do if you're not rooted.

@wayrad

I think I'll pass on deleting files for the moment.

Not rooted here. What is Titanium? Is that what nklenchik was refering to in the link you provided?

Titanium Backup lets you back up, disable ("freeze") or delete apps in rooted phones. This includes things that are inaccessible in nonrooted phones, so I don't know whether the entries that I froze will even be visible if you aren't rooted. As I mentioned in my edit, my memory was off - I just froze those 2 things rather than deleting them. Yes, it's nlenchik's posts that had the answer.

I've seen a number of explanations of the problem, but no definite answer. I don't have any DRM'd stuff on my phone as far as I know.

Have the same thing popping up on my EVO. I've just been sitting at my desk listening to music and watching sprint tv then when I went to the home screen saw the two messages. It's the second time I've seen them in about 2 weeks.

My guess is that an app is causing this that is using DRM that stores some part of the DRM code, license, certificate or key (so to speak) on the SD card. It then probably is looking for that code/license/whatever and can't find it when you have mounted via USB. And since the SD card is mounted, no files on it can be accessed by apps, so this DRM'd app then pops the error.

As long as it's not preventing you from using/watching listening to anything, I think you can safely ignore these notifications (unless your pirating apps or something, which doesn't sound like anyone here, but if you are.... you should immediately smash your face into a wall to correct the issue. ;) )

Edit: you can use my app Listables ( if you want ) to compare lists of your apps and just post here to see if there is a common suspect.

I started getting these messages to, but only in the past few days. The only new app I installed recently was Lookout. I do not have a rooted phone (It's an HTC Evo). There's no video on it except what I've shot from the camera. There's a handful of MP3s on it, none of them with DRM.

I think alostpacket is probably right (or at least on to something), as I've only seen this pop-up when the Evo was connected to my PC. I also had USB Debugging turned on.

FWIW, I ran Log Checker and searched through the system log of my Evo. While I see something called DRMIntentScanner looking through my SD Card after it was re-mounted,it doesn't find anything. I didn't find any reference to any licenses missing.

I've seen this being mentioned by other users, but only in recent months. I have a feeling this is due either to a silent update pushed out by Google, or a commonly used app.

I'm probably going to contact Sprint support about this. It will be completely useless, but hey why not? :)

I started seeing these alerts too, though it has nothing to do with any protected media. I see mine after using Google Goggles after submitting a search. Again, after clicking on the alert, nothing happens. I'm on HTC ThunderBolt. Never saw this on my old Droid.

Ok I got this message again on Sunday. This time I was paying attention. I had opened up Ringdroid and tried to see if I could record me playing guitar directly into my phone. The quality was lousy for one. then I noticed directly after this there was the DRM notification again. So at least for me it would appear to be tied to Ringdroid at least during this incident. I also just tried again and boom two more DRM notifications from opening ringdroid.

I don't think it is anything to worry about, but at least I know one thing that is causing it.

I've not gotten that message and this may or may not be relevant but mentioned it before in a different post ( http://androidforums.com/android-applications/266947-help-whats-eating-my-data.html ).
I am still seeing large data usage under the ambiguous Media Storage/DRM Protected Content Storage/Download Manager system app. My data has doubled in the last month or so and I have loaded no new apps or increased my usage that much. I have three lines on my family plan and all three show increased data usage...something is up somewhere.
Has anyone else noticed this?

From what i've noticed. It has to do with music that was downloaded from a P2P network. If you pay attention to your phone when your using the MP3 player, it will pause before it gives you the DRM notification, and the DRM Note will tell you what song it is that you have to buy a license for. Had this issue a few times. I just delete the songs.

I will have to keep an eye out for it then...I mostly listen at work or at night (sleep timer on, not paying attention!). The majority of my tunes are mine (cd's) or 'legal' songs I bought. Some are through iTunes that I had to rip to get rid of DRM and some...well...not sure where they came from.
Why though does it use sooo much data and really, does it need to check anyway? Big brother is watching the tunes I have loaded on my SD card? Really?

Edit: This does not account for the increased data usage on the other 2 lines, neither of them use their phones as mp3 players. Just thought I'd clarify. Something has changed and I don't know what.

Well if it is checking downloaded music then it isn't anything I have. I have not downloaded one single piece of music. I have not even copied a piece of music to the phone. Granted there are about 5 songs or so that came already on the phone when I bought it so I suppose it could be something there.

Just curious - are all you CDMA or GSM, too?
I've seen similar on the computer, but it was my own files from my camera! At one time, MS tried to stick some kind of DRM control into Firefox, and caused a major backlash. So it could be Google, or your carrier requesting it. Silverlight has DRM control. If you have Silverlight, could it TF some messages about DRM to phone? Sony went crazy with DRM years ago and got sued for those efforts. So an update to an app could cause it.
I haven't seen it on the SGS4G, (GSM)but I don't use the music app and I froze everything else.

CDMA here, rooted HTC Incredible on Verizon. Never downloaded anything P2P, or any music at all, and all my books are DRM-free. Unless Zedge gave me some dubious ringtones, I can't imagine what could have triggered the message. Anyway, freezing those two apps or processes with names containing "DRM" fixed it just fine.

Hmm, I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but could this have anything to do with some Market apps being on the card or partially so? Some sort of license check going awry after the card has been mounted on the PC?

This is exactly what is happening, see my post earlier in this thread.

It has nothing to do with music heh. That would be a huge PR nightmare.

This just popped up twice today when plugging my phone into my laptop. And like Jeff the only app I've installed recently (this is my Second HTC EVO) is Lookout Mobile Security. Kill it. Kill it now.

I haven't done any phone system updates Except lookout.
