Welcome to the forums! I am unsure on your phone, as I have a Desire HD. If you check the forum related to your phone, then you will be able to get handset specific advice!

If you want to send a text message, you should see an icon on your home screen that says "messaging". If you don't than you can find it in the app drawer. When you receive a text message, there should be a notification in the bar at the top of the screen. If you drag that down and tap the message, you can read it and reply.
