Root Droid 3 Has Root - Same exploit might work for Bionic

This would go a long way towards getting a Bionic in my pocket. I am on the fence as to what phone I want to get. I actually became eligible today. I am planning to see more about the Nexus phone possibly coming to VZW and will decide maybe in November/December. Root on the Bionic would go a long way for me though. It seems like a badass phone.

Any chance Moto can put out a last minute patch before the Bionic comes out to close whatever loophole this is?

Of course they can and more than likely will close the exploit before the Bionic comes out. It'll be updated. This coming before the Bionic will definately seal the deal and close it. I was considering the Bionic but who knows. May just wait till the thing is definately rooted and rom'd and wifi tether is working good and clean. Otherwise I won't have tethering. So I gotta wait some more....oh well....

At this point, Bionic has most likely "gone gold" and the SW has been finalized for release. There's no going back for them at this point. The only thing they could do is prepare an OTA update that fixes the exploit and push it out to all of the phones. But we all know how long it takes Moto to prepare and release a patch....

I just read on the dx forum that the droid 3 one click rooting method works on all moto phones running gingerbread. Hopefully this is the case for the bionic. I am going to use my wifes upgrade but want to make sure that the phone can be rooted first because i live in the sticks and we only get satellite internet.

The Moto VZW Gingerbread builds monitor root and block tethering. The only way around it is to get a fully custom or CM7 ROM that has removed all of the Verizon services that monitor root.

This is the kind of thing I don't like....

Wonder if someone is going to come along and build a 'stock' Moto GB release that simply removes those monitoring tools without doing anything else....

Yes, custom ROMs are nice, but it also helps when having a truly stock ROM with only root added for comparisons. In this case, it would be less stock b/c of he removed monitoring tools, but still....

This is the first time I've heard this. can anyone else with a rooted gb moto phone confirm this for all tethering apps (barnacle, wifi tether, PDAnet)?

It has confirmed numerous times with the Droid X. (I have seen it first hand on my phone) I imagine the same will be confirmed when Gingerbread is rolled out to the D2 in the coming weeks

There is a .zip that allows you to do it on dx.
That was developed by P3Droid and TBH. Since then, TBH has taken down the link to the download for the DX and offered a file to undo the fix and discouraged all forms of tethering. P3droid has also said the VZW can still tell if you are tethering, even if you have the radio hack and will automatically subscribe you for tethering. Only way around this is to load a custom ROM which may or may not come for Bionic.

We need to all change our UAstrings to IE9 in the mobile browser just to mess with them.

It's how I used to look up info when my Gentoo builds would go awry....

Archhhhhhhhh

But I'm sure this root will work on the Bionic, unless of course they patch it.

Which would suck.

But I doubt it. They put more effort into locking the bootloader anyway.

I'm pretty damned sure that they've already started shipping the phones out, so I highly doubt any patching is going on now.

And OTA patch, however, would suck. Tremendously. As in big green donkey...you know.

Agreed that an update can not be added if shipping for next week. Also, since wifi tether is now policed at chip level, VZW will not break their backs pushing an update to squash root. Their main hatred for root was the non contract wifi tethering.

Still, almost guaranteed that when an update does get released, current method for root will be stopped.

How is it policed at chip level? Is this something new with the recently released phones?

Unfortunately, sounds like I was right about them patching the exploit from what I've heard elsewhere and read here...well, I'll be waiting for the next phone that is unlocked apparently....
