Help Droid and .csv (outlook contacts)?

Timaphillips

Android Enthusiast
When sharing contacts between people in my office, I always get .csv files when asking for a contact. This is used with Outlook and my old Blackberry supported it. My Droid, doesn't (pun not intended). Getting the contact via the Gmial on my PC doesn't work either. So, is there a good app that will "translate" .csv contacts to work with my gmail contacts/Droid?

I have Bump installed, which is pretty cool, but not useful with other blackberry's or receiving .csv's in Gmail.

Can't you import it via the contacts section of gmail, upon which it will appear on your Droid? Click contacts in gmail, then click import in upper right corner. Says it supports csv importing, which I think is how I did it awhile ago...

There is a perfect app called iCSV Address Book in Android market. You can import contacts from any CSV file copied on your SD card. In addition it provide an easy way to export contacts to CSV file for sharing.

Or you can log into Gmail, import the *.csv file into the address book, and you can then export it to a "vCard" file (*.vcf), which the Droid can use.

Once you import it into GMail, there's no need to do anything else but sync your DROID ... if it doesn't do it automatically.

True...but I didn't want my contacts in Google's "cloud", and prefer to have a "flat file" for backup, and for exporting to my car's head unit.

Gotcha. That's totally your prerogative. :)

I import and export from GMail on the laptop and use Excel to manage my Contact file. Works for me.

Now ... tell me about this "car's head unit" of yours. Whatcha got? (Inquiring minds.)

Wait, you bought a Google phone, but don't want them to have your data??

I knew nothing of Android, nor did I have a gmail account, back in November when I got the Droid. I bought it spur of the moment, since it was offered as a b-day present, and I was looking to parlay my Fios account into a "tripple play bundle". The Droid happened to meet "most" of my requirements at the time, unfortunately, it was only 1 of about 3 which did, and still do.

But no, I did not know just how invasive google's product suite could be, even though most of it is elective, as I've never used any of their offerings, save google.com's "search".

Yeah, massaging my contacts via Excel for Skype is much easier than via the phone.

As far as the HU...Pioneer AVIC-700BT. Best $350 I ever spent...$415 w/XM module (sorry for big azz pic...tryin' to finish taxes):

Not sure how much this would help the OP but the next version of my app Listables (see my sig) supports exporting contacts via vCard/vcf. The update should be out this week too. I already have it working just putting the finishing touches on. I have been thinking of adding CSV support too but that wont come until later.

Actually I just uploaded the update tonight, how important is exporting in CSV to you guys? I dont think it would be a difficult addition actually...

I needed to do this today.

I created a csv file from my old phone (Samsung Caliber) by exporting the entire list to Outlook 2003

Then, I followed the simple instructions at gmail for creating a CSV import file which is very flexible and only requires you include a header for each column.

I imported that into gmail then synced with my Droid. Piece of cake and save MANY MANY hours of manual labor.

Oh, I then turned off the gmail auto syncing function and deleted all the contacts from gmail so the contacts are only on my phone.
