droid does...what?

ok, so i went ahead and bought my first android phone convinced that it's the best thing in the world. i had the iphone 4, and my friend smashed it, and gave me this phone. he told me this phone is the sh*t ....it f*n prints money, it grants up to 3 wishes, even if one of those wishes is for an iphone 4.

i have 3 simple questions for the android os, can it do these things? if so, please tell me how

can it do mechanisms for organic chemistry?

can it print money? j/k bou this

i was told that its customizable from everything from widgets to icons. how do i change the icons and everything?

how do i use rom manager? it seems soooo complicated..custom roms look sweet, but i dont wanna mess up my phone. i already rooted it using z4root. and does rom manager backup all my apps as well? if so, how?

long press an empty spot to add shortcuts or widgets. Long press a shortcut or widget to move or remove it.

launcherpro is one of the more popular home replacements, it has several really useful widgets. most manf's 'custom' launchers (blur, sense, etc) have built in widgets that you can long-press to activate. android also has some 'stock' widgets that are there regardless.

most phones have a specific rooting/flashing procedure. go to your phones forum, and find it. depending on your phone, using rom manager (clockword mod) may or may not be advisable. (amon's RA recovery is another popular one)

that said, the procedure is generally:
1)root
2)flash recovery
3)backup flash
4)wipe
5)flash custom rom

going to be pretty much the same regardless of which rom or recovery you are using. its a lot easier than it sounds :/

From my experience, if you get the Desktop Visualizer app from the market you can make an icon of any size, with any picture you want to be the icon and make it do whatever you want when you touch it. If you want a full screen picture of your Uncle Chester on one of your pages so you can tap to call him you can do that. If you want to fill a whole page with 1x1 pictures of your favorite people you can do it that way as well. It's even kinda neat if you wanna hide something on your homescreen (dunno why you'd do it, but you can) so that you touch the "Calculator" icon and it goes to some website (midget tossing, etc) or whatever you can think of. :)

Have fun!

SO simple, yet i got my phone bricked =)

Custom roms suck, and look beyond cheezy. I tried to restore it back using rom manager, and now im stuck at the vibrant screen at bootup.

another paperweight, *sigh*

do u kno how i can get the phone back running?

Rooting and flashing ROM's definitely isn't for the non-technical. You can do a great deal of customization without rooting or custom ROMs.

As far as being bricked... you probably aren't. If you did a backup via ROM Manager, you will have to boot into recovery and do a restore. What device you have depends on how you get to that screen. On my Incredible, you hold down the power and volume down buttons until you get a boot screen, then select "Recovery" (volume up/down moves the selection, and pressing the power selects).

There are a good number of ROM's, and I can change ROM's in usually less than 10 minutes... plus some time to rebuild my homescreens and set the apps back up. Flashing is the easy part, and the one I am on is without a doubt better looking that stock. Especially with things like Launcher Pro and Desktop Visualizer (neither of which require root or custom ROMS).

Wait, you are damning ALL custom roms because you messed up and bricked your phone? That is a little unfair, don't you think? there are some custom roms that run more or less stock (I am thinking this is what you are referring to as cheesy, although the iPhone 4, which I also came from, has a simple grid of icons too, so not sure how that looks any less cheesy). Anyway, it might help to say exatly what you did to the phone and how you got there. The foru for your specific device might be more helpful as well.

edit: You need to go visit the vibrant forum. really hoping this isn't a giant apple troll.

which phone do you have? rooting some phones is experimental, and with some older ones it takes only a few seconds with a 1-click program download.
