I've never worked on a forum... but have worked in the past in similar positions. Many years ago... pre internet days (cough cough) I moderated three conferences (much like specific forum threads) on an echoed discussion forum called ILink. I also helped to run the local university's BBS. Then, I had two and helped on two other disciplined chat rooms for years. It takes a lot of work and you manage to make an enemy or two along the way as well. It has it's rewards but it's much much more than just a status symbol when you are trying to make a desirable atmosphere for the majority. I don't envy the ones in charge here.. but I sure admire them and enjoy their efforts.

it can be very rewarding too though... especially as you see it grow
There are some that do see it as a status symbol as you say and treat the forumites like lessers
I don't mind it except for the odd bit of bueraucracy ... and I could do with being more consultative lol :D
anyway, its all a learning curve

There will always be bureaucracy and politics involved in any group. Not being anything but a user here... I've seen none of it. (as it should be) I know from experience it exists. It must be somewhat harmonious however for as I said.. I've seen no friction between the cogs. And I do agree, the reward is in the satisfaction you have helped in some small fashion to make a desirable environment for the masses and helped groom a site that is fun, interesting, and informative. It's hard to pull that off sometimes without seeming to pull rank on the common guy. That is what I've seen and enjoyed about AF.. control when necessary levied judiciously.

You are right there
The mods are also great at dropping hints to stop people to get into trouble ... saved me a few times :o

You should pm phases if your interested player

I'm always interested in helping out.. a definite flaw in my personality lol. Skipping around the threads today I think there are many that are interested lol. I won't bother phases. I'm certain there is enough on the plate to make a meal lol. If the line ever shortens and there is a need... definitely count me in.

Phases is still looking for more guides and not everybody who applies will get it. Besides, you never know how long it might be until the next staff change (this one was long over due). If you're interested, don't miss your chance :)

What he said olbriar(sorry on app and busy, lol)

Well I wasn't.. until they talked me into it. I doubt seriously if anything will come of it. Seriously, there are a lot of caring and qualified people on this forum that have a desire to be a bigger part of it. I don't envy Phases trying to pick the sweetest apples in the barrel. You can't know everyone and even if you did.. it would still be a difficult call. One way or another.. it's a great forum and they have some great staff. Can't say that about a lot of forums.

^Exactly.

The position is open to many users, since it became much more of a "volunteer" thing. Of course, we still need to pick users out of the lot since we don't need hundreds of Guides, but if you're interested and have a good history you have chances of becoming a guide. However, depending on the number of requests, you might not become one simply because of bad luck: sometimes even good picks can't be promoted simply because we can't promote everyone. :)

Understood. I certainly won't be upset or take offense if I'm passed over. I'm sure there are many well meaning and well deserving among the user base. There might even be some that have first hand experience which would be a plus. I'm betting there is a very large pool to draw from for the majority of users here are level headed well meaning... and quite likely to express a desire to contribute.

I think it is a good thing that there are many volunteers, even if not everyone gets picked. The more there is to chose from, the greater the chance that those that do get picked will continue with the great work done by current and previous staff. My name is in the hat. I love AF and want to do whatever I can to help.

**EDIT** BTW Morning All!

Morning. The fact that so many have offered is a great reflection on the users here in my opinion. They won't have any trouble filling the roster.
Good luck to ya Skorp... I'd vote for ya.
