I have the Razr Maxx and would like the upgraded memory and processing of the Droid Maxx but they took away the search and menu buttons, and I'm wondering if there is a mod (for root) that puts those buttons back on the screen above the capacitive buttons. I've seen the Cyanogenmod add-on that adds those buttons to the already-existing software buttons on the Nexus 4, but I don't want an extra row of Back, Home, and Multitask buttons above the capacitive buttons.

Is this an unreasonable request?

Nobody? I just want to put Search and Menu above the Droid Maxx's capacitive buttons. This would be useful for other phones too, if you're a mod developer.

I'm not sure that I would call it unreasonable, but, since ICS, all home screens on Android have a permanent search field, and all apps that have searchable content have a search control somewhere, so I'm not sure that a search button is required.

I really don't think that there is much root development for this phone at all at the moment. I'm unrooted (and plan to stay that way; this is the first phone where I haven't felt that root is needed), so I haven't paid as much attention to development on the phone as I have on my past phones.

The Maxx has an option to make a long-press of the recent apps button be the equivalent of a menu button press (settings->display->Use long press for menu), so I'm not sure that a soft menu button is required, either, though I must say that I am not 100% sure that I like Google's decision to deprecate the menu button for a recent apps button - long press of home in pre-Honeycomb versions was a recent apps control, and that could easily have been continued, IMHO.

As for adding on-screen soft buttons like this as an option - I'd be fine with it as an option, but I don't want it on my phone right now, no.

BTW, my last phone was a Droid 3, which only saw Gingerbread, so I am a rather recent adopter of the current button layout, so it did take a few days to get used to the current style. But, it really wasn't that hard a transition.

... especially if you have Nova Launcher Prime installed. It takes away a lot of motivation to be root-ed.

I turned the option on for the menu with the long press and it has Nova settings added.
