Droid newbie/bing hater - google wanted

Just got a commando - and want to rid it of Bing. I am brand new to the droid world and most recently had a BB 3 years ago.

Do I need to root? I'm skeptical and am not a techie at all. I want a few simple changes, like google on the right corner search key.

Any other MUST make changes I don't know about?

please help this Droid neophyte

What is Bing exactly in the phone? A search widget? Just remove it. An app? Just uninstall it from Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage applications.

Bing (in addition to being an app) is the default when you hit the right hand soft key/search on a commando.

I am so clueless about smartphone OS, and everything i've read re: the topic is about rooting the phone, i don't know where to start and more importantly..... because i'm clueless about the new smartphones , I don't want to mess it all up. I just want to hit the soft key and have google.

It seems that everything i've read online talks about endless error loops... not my idea of fun nor do I have the ambition and drive to fix ****ed up shit.

If the easy answer is - "live with bing" then that's the unfortunate truth.

The big question here is: what apps are the most bloated of the bloatware?

For Bing, if you uninstall it, the search button will use Google. Its just been set to default buy whoever sold you that phone.

ok.

so now the challenge is unistalling it. It seems to be locked because no options pop up when I'm in the manage apps menu.

hints..... or should I say step by step ?

If it's bloatware locked, you need to root to remove it. To get Google without removing, go to Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage Apps>Go to tab that says "ALL">Look for Bing>Open it, scroll down>Select clear defaults.

You could also install 'Google Search App' (or the 'Google Voice Search' app; or both) on your phone, and place their icons anywhere you like on your home screens.

Bing is Microsoft's me-too Google Search wannabe.

Are you sure your phone runs under Android, and not Windows Mobile (or whatever the current incarnation's name is)? ;)

Bing is getting obnoxious. MS is now doing some kind of partnering with Firefox to have Bing the default browser. There are other downloads that will automatically install Bing if you don't see the checkbox to NOT install it. There was quite a discussion about this bad habit at a DSLReports.

Watching the TV news at night, if anyone puts up a map, it is usually Bing. So if you use the station's app, you might get Bing whether or not you want it.

I'm assuming the phone mfg or carrier thought Bing was a good idea. Or you do have the new windows phone.

I have Bing forbidden by the Firewall and in the Hosts file on the pc. I have found no way to block it rooted or unrooted phone on Android.
