Droid RAZR activation question...

A couple of months ago I dropped my Droid RAZR on the kitchen floor which shattered the lower portion of the screen. No insurance (live & learn). I put a screen protector over to prevent cuts and it works. Not worth over $300 to fix & not eligible for upgrade until 10/2013. I still have my OG Droid and Incredible if i need them. Friday I received a surprise package from my dad that contained a new RAZR. He added a line to his account & purchased the phone and sent it (unactivated) to me (best dad ever)! Do I just need to put my current SIM in the new phone to activate it on my account? I have grandfathered unlimited data plan. Will this change my plan? Will his 'share everything' account be affected by having a number with no phone? He also put insurance on the phone. Should he cancel this or does insurance follow the phone since he is still paying the bill? I don't want to be shady just not sure how it works. Sorry for such a long post. Thanks for any help/advice you can give me.
And a big thank you to my dad! Even at 40 years old I am still "Daddy's Little Girl"

Not entirely sure, but a stop by the Verizon store should get it running again, its like he "sold" it to you. I'm not sure however about the insurance sticking with it.

Hmm, well your dad needs to activate it on his new line first, or else he is going to be charged full retail for the phone after a set amount of time. But assuming he has done that already, all you need to do is put your current sim card in the new phone, and it should activate on your line. You will need to re-install all your apps, contacts etc. as if it were a new phone of course.
