Droid RAZR: Review (Demo Unit)

thought I'd just add that the thickness of the "bump" at the top is about 9-10 mm. they never seem to specifically mention that. I measured it this morning at the V store. The phone felt and looked pretty good, but I'm leaning towards the nexus, but haven't ruled out the razr yet. can't believe I paid Cingular $500 for an original razr on day 1.

I love the look of this phone, hey I'm a girlie girl but luvs me a nice piece of hardware!

(CK on a practical note...how did you email the pics you took from the store demo RAZR to yourself?)

Well awesome Droidette! Glad to see a girlie girl like it lol. It really is an awesome piece of hardware when you handle it. Not like any smartphone you have ever handled.

To email the pic. You just bring up the pic and hit the share icon and it gives you all the options. I chose gmail. Was instant. There was no delay in waiting for it to attach and send. Bam! Done.

I just looked at the time stamp on my emails when I received them and they both came in at the same time, 1:26 pm

Anyway thats how you do it.......

I checked out a working model. I think the white pixelated look on the icons is just motos blur. I figured out the bionic pixelation looked like screen refresh rate.

I won't hijack my boy's thread, but I held it today. I tried REALLY hard not to, but I couldn't help myself.

I only had time to give it 15 minutes, but build quality was superb. Had CK not mentioned it, I might not have noticed, but the power button was a little "loose," but was my only complaint. I also tried to scratch the back (the Kevlar) with a key, but couldn't.

To the above, what struck me most about the RAZR is that it's impossibly thin and impossibly light. You can watch videos all day and surf websites, but they just don't reliably impart upon the user how light and thin this phone is. It's like holding a debit card (but bigger) in your hand and yet I tried to break it and couldn't.

It was blazingly fast. Screen to screen. Home page to internet, home page to youtube videos...just FAST. I loaded probably 10 different youtube videos and it was smokin'.

The camera. I concur with CK. It takes about 2 seconds to autofocus, but once it does the little "square" goes from white to green and once it's green it's instantaneous. As in basically zero lag and the picture quality was suitable for my needs.

Okay, I'm done now, but to sum it up I was 80/20 Nexus when I picked up the RAZR. The hands on makes me somewhere in the 50/50 or 60/40 RAZR range. If the Nexus in fact launches as "web only" as some websites are reporting, this will be my next phone. In fact, as noted above, it's 50/50 my NEXT regardless. Loved the screen, the speed, and everything about it. Gushing now, I know...

Burnt you are not hijacking my thread! Whats mine is yours :)

I loved your mini review. I agree, the RAZR is just a solid device all the way around but the build and feel is truly one of a kind.

I havent even explored all the capabilities to their fullest (motocast, smart actions etc) so there is still a lot more to look forward to. Not to mention after the newness wears off we will have ICS to look forward to. Who knows what that will bring (beside the obvious)

Maybe some new Moto UI enhancements? It will be 11/11/11 all over again.

Hopefully we will see you on this side of the fence but the Nexus will be a great phone as well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Wow...all these reviews are really making me question the Nexus...my dang impatience is driving me crazy! This phone does sound quite awesome...

:) hang in there! You made it this far whats a few more weeks? Yeah I know...a long time lol. But seriously the Nexus is what you really want and the finish line is up ahead. You can do it! Lol

After reading this thread, I had to go to the Verizon store and try out the razr demo unit (Durham/Cary NC). I agree with most of the positives said, but one thing that did surprise me was how hot the front glass felt on the upper half of the phone. Granted, they probably didn't have battery saver setting so the screen was viewable all the time, but it really felt uncomfortable...up to a point I had to take my hand away.

Otherwise, everything looked pretty good on the phone. It was snappy, responsive, and the screen looked very good.

Suggest waiting until next week at least, so we understand how well the device is in regards to heat and battery life. The device will get a good testing from some of the folks here :) Media reviews the same week of device release tend to be shallow. Anandtech is great example of waiting for a good thorough review.

Thanks CK, just wish I'd had more time. It's funny because the build quality seems exactly the opposite of the OG. The OG is built like a Sherman tank, but this is so light it feels like a feather and yet when you try and "lean" on it a bit it just doesn't give at all. This is going to sound lame, but it's sort of like what I imagine a piece of alien technology feeling like. Super light, but super strong. Obviously, it's somewhat over the top but that's the impression I got. Really, really liked the phone...Clearly. I'm doing my best to wait and hold the GN as well to compare, but like I said before, if they actually do the web only version I'm not playing that game. I need to hold it before I buy it. Just my personality.

Forget waiting a week Rush....

I'm gettin it day one, if it doesn't live up to expectations it'll get returned after a few days worth of play time...If it does live up to expectations.. I keep it...

Plus you have to figure...

The Razr is launching on 11/11...

So 14 days from that date is Black Friday, surely they'll have to be some solid info on what's going on with the GNex...unless it drops before that date...

LOL that's exactly it. I couldn't quite explain it. It's strangely light and strong. Sitting in your hand it's like a card or something.

Alien tech is a great description :) very strange feeling...but in a good way. I've never handled a smartphone like it.

I really like all the great reviews and thank you for them. I only wish the store near me would get some in so i can play with it myself! I stopped at the only verizon retailer in my town today and they said they dont have any at all in and are hoping to have some before 11/11/11

I'm really interested in the Facial Recognition unlock on 4.0, that stood out most. When I read that, I instantly thought of the TV show, Las Vegas.

BRING IT GOOGLE!! lol... and now, before work tomorrow, I'm stopping by Verizon and checking the phone out myself. Nice job today, tnx.

haha BTW people. 1 thing I haven't heard from ANYONE yet.

Hours spent overall testing the phone, scratching the kevlar, messing with the power button... not 1 person had the balls to pour water on it huh? Should I be the first tomorrow? "OOPS, I'M SORRY, HOPE I DIDN'T RUIN IT"? :D
