Droid RAZR: Review (Demo Unit)

Android Expert
I just got back from the Verizon store after spending a good solid 45 minutes on the Droid RAZR.

My first impression(s)? very impressed but not perfect.

Lets start off with the Boot Animation. I always reboot a device before testing anyhow so this was a chance to see it live and in person and what a treat it is. If you haven't seen it yet check out DL for the video. It's very nice. Boot time was pretty fast. I didn't time it but it couldn't be anymore than 20-25 seconds.

Build quality. The build quality on this handset is simply stellar. It has but one problem though which I will get to in a moment. The phone is incredibly light, which was a huge surprise. It's very hard to describe the feeling in hand. When you look at the phone you see a solid, razor thin phone. Well thats the way it feels in hand but it's more than that. Very hard to describe but it's not bulky or cumbersome at all. It's just comfortable. Those familiar with Gorilla Glass already know the smooth silky feel it has. No need to mention that.

The Kevlar backing. Ahh yes Kevlar. The Kevlar backing will NOT be easy to scratch and believe me it wont. Unless you are applying excessive pressure with a metallic object the Kevlar will NOT scratch. It almost has a very slight rubber feel to it when you depress your fingernail against it. Applying pressure on a fingernail or key and dragging it across the Kevlar will not mark it or mar it. Believe me I did it :) The phone naked will hold up in your pocket with change and keys just fine. Can it be scratched? Of course, what can't. Everyday normal use and the phone will be fine.

The one mark against the build quality is the power button. On a naked phone I can see it getting snagged and torn off while pocketing the device if one is not careful. The aluminum button is very "sharp" around the edges and doesn't sit too firmly on the handset. It is not going to fall off through normal use but since it is sharp I can see it getting snagged and torn off. The particular demo unit I used had some play in the button. So that is a mark against it.

Last thing about build and aesthetics. The phone is very masculine. Sorry ladies but this phone may not be very appealing to you. I took my girlfriend with me and the first thing she said is "I don't like it. Thats more of a phone for you." I knew what she was saying asked anyway "What do you mean?" "It's too masculine" Personal opinion? Yeah probably but she's a girlie girl. You know the type that like to bling their phones out or put pretty pink cases on them? Well thats her.

Camera: I'm going to put the camera issue to rest. The camera takes pics instantly. You point it at something, it focuses and once you hit the button it takes it. There is no wait. Quality is subjective and I'm no expert but the pics I took looked good to me. I posted a couple below. Again, there's no wait and the camera is fast. Plenty of options too.

Screen: The screen while beautiful is not anything you have not seen. If you have seen the Charge and SGSII's well you've seen the RAZR's to an extent. There is but two big differences. The text under the icons (while on home screen) is pixelated. Now before you run off and get bent out of shape it's not horrendous, but it is noticeable (to me at least) and to be perfectly honest some may not even notice it. Battery icon there is absolutely no pixelation at all. In the menu's and while on webpages it's not even noticable but there is something about the homscreen Icons that makes the pentile matrix evident (again to me) Whites are NOT bright (see the Charge and SGSII) The good news about the screen is that it is not as blown out with saturation as the SGSII or Charge. Once again to the average user they won't even notice these things but to the seasoned users don't expect to be blown away. It's a beautiful screen and like I said it's really nothing you have not already seen. I will say Bionic owners will want to burn Motorola down after seeing this screen on the RAZR :)

Speakers: plenty loud and clear. Is it Bose? No, but it gets the job done. I played Madden Football on it and had to turn it down because it was so loud.

Call Quality: N/A

UI: As to not write a novel here. The UI was very fluid (no lag at all) and snappy. Animations are real nice. As you scroll though home screens the widgets are slightly faded then as they settle into place they brighten up. There is an option to turn off animations. Something I should mention that will make many happy. Bloat does not run on the RAZR. If you don't launch the bloat and just hide it they don't run. After a fresh boot no bloat was running. So the RAZR runs very lean-n-mean.

Livewallpapers: Nothing to see here. Booorrrring. Not even the Droid neural network is on it :( The wallpapers that come with it are outstanding though. Again just my opinion.

So i played games, watched video, texted, surfed the web, emailed, shot pics and downloaded apps (market) and after 45 minutes the phone was still purring along and still cool as a cucumber. Don't mistake that for no heat though. The screen generates the most heat interestingly enough but the back of the phone was not anything out of the ordinary. Heat was not an issue and this was on 4G the whole time.

So after 45 minutes I'm more than excited to finally receive my device. It's going to be an excellent phone and I think everyone will be more than pleased with it. This phone delivers on speed, smoothness, build and looks. It's not perfect, but what phone is.

I hope when everyone gets their phones they enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks for reading!

I was wondering about the lock/power button and also the Moto logo above the screen. While it won't make a difference for me I could see it being and issue with people putting it in a pocket and taking it back out. Note to Motorola, all buttons should should be smooth so as not to snag on things. While the diamond cut aluminun accents look nice they would have been fine either smooth or anodized like the back of the Xoom.

As far as the PenTile goes I know for a fact I will see it. For whatever reason my eyes detect all imperfections on any type of screen wether it be LCD, Plasma, DLP, OLED, anything. I see pixels, screen door effect, dlp rainbows, etc. I am also the type of person that loves accurate colors. In your opinion how bad is it on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being best? The Incredible AMOLED pixels look like legos to me and I would rate it a 1. The SAMOLED on the Fascinate is better but not near as bad as the Incredible and I would rate it a 4. The SAMOLED+ on the SGS II is RGB stripe and as far as pixels go I would rate it a 9. The RGBW on the Bionic is bad as well but better than the fascinate or the Incredible and I would rate that a 6.

Why would they take such care on the rest of the device and then mess up the power button? I had read a few days ago that the power button was sharp and shallow...

The back is not removable correct? So no way to fix the rattle by shoving something next to the button? I had to do this with the volume rocker on my fascinate...

Power button doesn't rattle. There is a lot of play on it though. Not when you depress it but when you take your finger and move it side to side. If left alone it's so light it doesn't move around. It's aluminum (as you know)

Shaking the phone doesn't make any rattling noises.

CK; thanks for the hands on first impressions. I am still on the fence between the RAZR and GN. However, I am slightly leaning toward the RAZR because of my perceived build quality of Moto products. Although, I will wait for similar hands on reviews of the GN and test-drive both products before I make my final decision.

Good to hear that Moto may have corrected the camera lag, which is frustrating with the Bionic. The other day I was trying to take a picture of my baby boy and timing was important. I ended using my wife's iPhone to snap the shot; then came the snickering from my better half.

In regards to the Razr being more masculine I would have to agree. I posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating.

The Droid Razr has stainless steel, Kevlar, diamond cut aluminum, gorilla glass. All very masculine.

The Galaxy Nexus is curved, made from plastic and is covered in hyper skin. Sounds like a female adult toy.

Which one do you want next to your face?:p:D

Isn't that image you posted ck the Bionic?

Yar, but he took those pics with the RAZR so we can see how the photo quality is.

CK: An awesome little write up there. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say thanks. Thanks for taking the time to go play with the phone, thanks for taking the time to put together your review...and hopefully your girlfriend didn't drag you shoe shopping for an hour to balance out the day :p

I'm even more excited now than I was 15 minutes ago :)

Lol well luckily for me when she saw it looked like a battle ax she left to go shopping.

Took her all of 30 seconds too hahahahaha

I'm with you when it comes to noticing the pixels. Although CerealKiller already gave a rating of 8.5, I can give you my rating as well. I saw the phone today, and if you've ever seen Captivate then it's just slightly better, with finer mesh look. However, pentile tech is very evident. With RGB screens, the pixels won't be as noticeable on colorful wallpapers, but on the Razr's screen I saw that dark mesh on any color combination. Droid Charge was next to it, and if you give that phone a rating of 9, then I give Razr 6.

Thank you CK, well written and very thorough.

Hey man, thanks for taking the time to write out your review, it was very good.

I had a chance to play with a Razr today as well. One thing I noticed was that the auto brightness seemed a bit too dim. I noticed it most when watching dark scenes on YouTube. Perhaps it was an issue with the unit at the store I visited. Did you come across any such issues?

Overall I was impressed with the Razr. PenTile is PenTile. It's there, I see it, I'll live. I noticed it the most in grey text for some reason.

Maybe I was expecting the worst, but I was pretty impressed with the speed of the camera. MUCH better than the Bionic as far as focus speed. Having owned the Bionic for 2 weeks, if I was to describe the experience taking pictures in one word, it'd have to be abysmal. The quality of the pictures on the Razr seemed just fine to my untrained eyes. A few reviews had mentioned the colors were washed out but I'd just describe them as "natural" looking. In any case they were plenty good for what I need.

Although the phone itself is a bit longer and wider than the Bionic as seen in a few side-by-side pictures. The width of the phone felt comfortable to me (I have some what large hands), and I had no problems reaching across the screen to touch icons. I tried scratching the Kevlar and the frame around the phone, that was said to scratch easily, and had no such luck. I even tried twisting the phone a little and all felt nice and solid. One thing I noticed which you also mentioned was the power button being a little tricky. I like to test locking and unlocking the screen a few times consecutively to see how it feels in my hand (crazy?). I had a problem a couple of times getting the power button to respond. Overall though, build quality was awesome. Probably the best phone I've ever held.

Like you said and I agree, "very impressed but not perfect."

nice review... The screen is obviously the biggie. Has there been validation that the screen is PenTile RGBG or is it PenTile Stripe?

I'm far from an expert but I believe it's PenTile RGBG sub-pixel layout. This a guess on my part based on less visible pixelation/screen door affect and slightly greyish/less bright whites in comparison to the Bionic which uses RGBW layout.

"It's not bose..."

Thanks God, right all my audiophile buddies...? amirite??
haha jk

Haha, was enjoying listening to some music via Beyerdynamic T1>Woo Audio WA2>Burson HA-160 as a DAC and thought, thank God for no ideas like that in Moto's head.

I got to play with the RAZR at the Verizon store at BJ's Warehouse. I have to concur with CK that the camera was focusing quite quickly when playing with the camera. It was significantly speedier than the Bionic I briefly owned. I focused on about 10-12 objects and the green square emerged fast each time. It didn't seem like the struggle it is on my Droid 2. Screen looked good, and the UI and opening apps were fluid. Some more attention should have been paid to the power button, but it's by no means loose and shouldn't dissuade someone from purchase. One would just expect it to be tighter to match the impeccable build quality of the rest of the phone, so a user might have an "Oh.. That didn't feel the way I expected" reaction to it. Not a dealbreaker. I didn't have my earphones with me, plus the store was loud, so I wasn't able to confirm the audio whine from the Bionic was a thing of the past, but I've heard none of the other reviewers complain about it thus far. Then again, I doubt many even tested for it to begin with. All in all, a good experience. Still on the fence between this and the Galaxy Nexus, but I think buyers or either will be quite satisfied. At least until CES in January. :)

I suspect a lot of people will share in your feelings about that power button. The way you said it pretty much sums it up...The reaction as to why is that on such a well built device says it all.

Addendum to the OP: If you are looking for a device with the most spectacular look, feel and materials that delivers the "perfect" Android experience then look no further.

The RAZR is a solid performer and it will deliver. I mean lets face it Android is Android is Android and today's phone really stack up against eachother. But one thing no other phone will be able to touch on the RAZR is the build quality and looks (thinness)

That in itself makes it stand out from the herd.

Enjoy the RAZR folks. Its pretty amazing.
