Droid typing input question

Does anyone know if it is possible to type characters (into a text message, for instance) with a virtual number pad while the phone is oriented vertically? I often like to text with one hand and use T9word or "abc" to input characters. I imagine there will be a setting for this, but I have not seen it in any screenshots or videos.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

In one of the reviews rob posted he mentioned "Better Keyboard" and (very) briefly showed it in use like the standard t9/abc layout.
