Root Droid X?

GreenMan62

Newbie
Ok so I am 100% new to rooting. I'm trying very hard to learn as much as I can, but it seems every time I turn a corner there is something new to confuse me. I've done searches on multiple forums to try to find the info I need, but am starting to run into a dead end. I'm sure this topic has been discussed 99 times, but seeing that I am not very knowledgeable I'm becoming very confused.

Is there a safe and stable way to root a Droid X with 2.3.4 and system version .621? I read some places that there is not, others say it can be done, but is unstable...ugh I'm confused. I have about 18 tabs opened in my browser and have been reading for the past 2 days. Can anyone please help me with this? Again I am terribly sorry if I'm bringing up an over discussed topic. If someone could even just point me into the right direction of a current thread Id be greatly appreciative.

*EDIT* Ok I JUST found the .621 soak test thread and it is giving me some info, sorry about that. SO basically if I root and it bricks...I'm screwed?

Thanks a lot for that link. I have been seeing some things about using motorolaoneclickroot, is this a viable way to root the droid x, or is it unstable or buggy? Sorry for sounding ignorant this is all new to me.

Once you are 621, forget about any previous ways to root, especially the one click methods, like I use to use... Basically, you will be on 621, possibly taken from the OTA from verizon that snuck in on folks like myself. This OTA fixed a whole bunch of stuff, extending the life a bit longer for those that did not root, but did not want to upgrade yet. People like me, that were rooted, were all of a sudden thrown into the detox tank for rooters.. lol so to speak.. I am not joking, I was having withdrawls.. but then there was an expoit found, that basically flashes 621 to the European version of the Droid x, called the Milestone x... from there you can run the one click Zerg root, and you are golden only for 2nd init roms, and the newer ICS roms, although some have been patched to work. You must use Linux to do this flash to 604 or you will screw up your radio.

Ok so I used the cd program to get to the Milestone .604 version, but when I chose the root option my computer just sits there and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

Make sure you have all the proper setting in your phone..such as " charge only" and USB debugging enabled...and make sure you are using the Zerg ( DooMLoRD that came in the 604 package) and make sure you unzip it to desktop before running or it wont work..no other root program will work. Follow the directions to the T...

Ya I had a brain fart, I forgot to put my phone into "PC Mode" haha. Thank you so much for all the help everyone, my phone is now rooted!

I am trying to flash clockwork recovery through Rom Manager, and none of the options will work. Am I doing something wrong? I chose the Droid X and when I try to reboot into recovery it just restarts the phone. I know I'm running the Milestone X version now, but the only other option that seems plausable other than Droid X is the Milestone, but it doesn't say Milestone X and neither of them work. Is there another way to make a back up other than using ROM Manager? I don't want to flash a ROM and be screwed. Also, will Droid X ROMs still work for me since I am suing the Milestone .604 version?

If you had it in PC mode, it was in correct... the Zerg diresctions say to have it in charge mode... download root checker from the market and see if it tells you if you are successfully rooted..

It's rooted I have the Superuser app and have been deleting system apps with terminal emulator. I'm just having a hard time trying to figure out how to create a nandroid backup.

Anyone have any idea why bootstrap recovery wouldn't be working on my phone? I received superuser permission said it was successful, but once I hit recovery it goes to the motorola logo then just a black screen and freezes. I have to pull the battery to reboot it.

*EDIT* Got it working.

I've always backed up my rom through CWM... but sometimes have had issues with it booting into the recovery.. I like doing it through CWM because I can label it.. sounds like you are on your way..
