Dropped, broke... any hope of recovering files?

Dropped my Captivate and the screens done. Would like to get some pics that for whatever reason didn't make it on my external card off if possible. When I plug it into my pc the drive will show up for a second but before I can get my mouse pointer to it it disconnects... Any ideas or is it a total loss at this point?

You say you cracked the device digitalizer and you want to access the photos . do u have a SD card in the device ..

They also said they are looking to get photos recovered that didn't "make it" to their SD card, so I assume they do have one!

Yes but one of the camera apps I was using wasn't saving to my external card. Didn't realize this till after the phone broke and I pulled the card to save to my pc

what kinda phone do u have?
does it still turn on?or the phone is dead?

Samsung Captivate, It will power On. Directly after it was dropped there was some color in the screen though you couldn't make out any images or anything. But while I was playing with it to see if I could get it to anything more the screen totally gave up and went black and seems completely unresponsive to touch. All the physical buttons seem to work but I'm basing that on I can power it on and off (can hear the power on and off sounds). In addition it will randomly make my text message alert sound even though it doesn't even have the sim card installed. And like I said my pc will connect to it for a second but not long enough to do anything. Would probably be helpful if I could see what was going on on the screen

oh one thing I didn't mention, when I plug it into my pc I get the noise that it has been connected ,the icon for the drive appears then disappears but the computer doesn't make the disconnect noise until I unplug the phone

now this is interesting... can't see it in my pc under computer (that's where it'll bink on really quick and disappear but (I'm using a windows 8 computer by the way) going through the control panel to devices and printers it is listed and I can see info about it... ran trouble shooting and it said "usb mass storage device appears to be old and can not work properly with usb 3.0 try connecting with usb 2.0". I just replaced my computer (old one had usb 2.0 replaced because 1) way out dated 2) the usb card failed so I could plug anything in). Last time I backed up my phone was via usb 2.0 My new computer only has usb 3.0 ports. So unless someone has a suggestion I'm looking for an old out dated computer with usb 2.0 or at least a new card for my old one...
Options?

finally got my old computer fixed, when I plug in the phone it shows 2 drives (even if I don't have a external memory card installed)... both when I try to open I'm ask to "insert disc into drive"... not sure where to go from here... re-down load drivers maybe?
