Duplicate sound files for ringtones, alarms, notifications, etc.

I don't know what caused this...

I'm on CM 7.2 and everything is working fine. However, I'm finding that when I go to select sound files for anything like ringtones, alarms, etc., the pop-up list shows duplicates for my sound files (the ones on the SD card). I double checked the SD card and there's only ONE unique sound file for each (not two in different folders). The default Android sound files appear only once.

I unmounted and removed my SD card and all of my mp3 files on the SD card disappeared. I then plugged the SD card back in, reloaded the ringtone selector, and again all of my SD card ringtones appear twice.

Is this a known defect? I can't find anything by searching for it.... I know the Hero is now an "archived" phone so there's not much activity for it. But, I'd figure that this would be a CyanogenMod 7 defect if anything. Or perhaps there's something a little wrong about the way it works on the Hero.

Hmmm, I never ran into this problem while I was using, I also didn't (and still don't) use custom ringtones. It could be a compatibility issue. Have you tried the CM forum at all?

Make sure you don't actually have duplicate files on your sd card. I had my custom ringtones and notifications in 2 folders in my sd card, and then on my phone, so i had triple tones/notifications. Moved them all to one folder and deleted the extra and now there are singles

^ I had searched the SD card to locate any duplicate files and there were none. However, the problem is SOLVED. How? Well, I'll tell you (cue Monty Python). ;)

I decided to try partitioning my micro SD card, despite the fact that it is 8Gb and only class 2 (I have a 32Gb class 6 on order, finally), in an effort to utilize the app2SD feature of CM7. This forced a complete wipe of the card.

During the copying process to offload data I had on the card, I encountered some reading problems. There were a few files that ended up with absurdly long cryptic names (under Amazon.books no less), and some sets of files that when copied en masse caused the Hero to stop seeing the SD card. Yep, I didn't pull the card yet the phone behaved as if I did. I had to delete some folders and files to get around this issue. Anyway, to make a long story short, after the reformat and partitioning of the card, the duplicates disappeared! I have a feeling that there was some bogus data in the FAT32 tables that was screwing things up. I don't really trust this card any longer, so hopefully I'll have the replacement soon.

So, in a nutshell, if you see duplicate SD card hosted files in any Android apps and searches on the card via Windows does not show any duplicates, then there's an issue with the SD card... reformatting it clears it up, but it's anybody's guess if it's long term or temporary.
