Dust under Screen issue

when i got a new Nexus, all my apps and settings got restored automatically (all I needed to do was go through the "agree" screen on a few apps) - but all, including paid, apps got reloaded.... You may not even need to backup, other than the stuff on your SD card, which you can just do a dump onto your computer.

But if you're worried - do the backup - in case what I experienced doesn't work for you...

Has anyone in the UK done an exchange yet? Mine, although speck-free a week ago, now looks like a minefield with all the little dust specks under the glass panel. I am not impressed.

HTC UK... expect a call in the morning :(

Hmm.. if they say the issue is resolved... maybe I'll send it in for cleaning after all. I wonder what the "fix" was.. maybe they put up little signs in the crevices that say "do not enter"

And, I only do coke on the back of the Nexus.

I ordered my first nexus from Google, when I received it, it wouldn't read my sim, so I sent it back and looked on craigs list to find one I could go check out before i bought it. It came with body armor already on it. I don't have any dust under the screen or any clicking. I doubt the body armor would help due to the fact it doesnt cover cracks and stuff, its cut out and pieced together. So I doubt that'll help some of y'all..

Also I doubt its getting in through the trackball that just don't sound right, I could be wrong but the sides of the screen would make more sense since the clicking noise would indicate not being fully pressed in.....

Who knows, all I care is I have no dust, I only use the neo pouch half the time and just don't see how it could happen just being in a pocket, sounds almost like they could have been shipped like that.......

Also I wanna say this phone is amazing don't let a little dirt scare ya, it may not happen... god made dirt and dirt don't hurt...lol

i have the phone for 1 day and in the top right hand corner theres a speck barely noticable in fact i had ot look for it...... but i have a new unit and its there. and yes i used the trackball on the first day alot. why do you think everyone is switching to trackpad.

so no this is prood the problem was not fixed and i keep it in the pouch constantly when not in use............ im ordering invisible shield full body today and a case and with those 2 on ill then put it in the pouch.

Ha!! Get an antiglare screen protector and load the Live Earth Wallpaper with the background set to the starfield and you'll have no idea whether you have dust or not - works for me ;)

Rang HTC UK today and they've happily accepted it the unit as faulty. DHL arrived a few hours later and collected the phone. HTC did advise I should get my replacement 'next day' but as stock is so low, I might have to wait till Saturday for a new handset. I'm already missing my Nexus :(

Sounds like they do it differently on the other side of the pond. Over here they send you the new phone first, you put yours in the box, slap a pre-paid sticker on it and send it back. I like it this way cuz I've got 10 days to send the old one back so I can go back and forth between the 2 and make sure my new phone is set up exactly like my old one b4 I send it back.

Well since I've got a new one on the way I'm going to use the sh** out of the trackball and see what happens.

As soon as I posted this I realized this test wouldn't work. What I really wanted to do was take the phone out of the pouch. If I started carrying it out of the pouch AND using the trackball a lot and I got more dust under the screen it wouldn't prove anything. So I decided to take it out of the pouch and NOT use the trackball at all. Well I can report that after a day out of the pouch I indeed have a few new friends under my screen that I know weren't there before. The dust I had before was in the upper left hand corner. This new dust is more toward the center. In addition, I do have a clicking noise when I press around the edges of my screen. From this I'm thinking that the dust is coming in from the edges of the screen.

This is actually really good news for me as I like to use the trackball for certain things. I can also test my new screen for that clicking sound. If I don't hear it I will confidently carry my phone sans pouch and use the trackball as I normally would. I will report back wether or not the new phone remains dust free.

I believe (no proof) that the clicking noise is air bubbles in the adhesive.

As I say, no proof but I have experience of selling epoxy adhesives into electronics and know it's possible. If the adhesive is not dispensed properly or if the adhesive does not defoam or level properly this could cause the problem.

Assuming this is how the screen or glass components are fixed...

i didn't notice much, if any, dust when i got it about 3 weeks ago; i put on the Zagg full body shield 2 weeks ago and now i see lots of dust on the bottom left corner and it is really starting to annoy me;

now, if i call up HTC, will they send a NEW phone or a refurbished one; also, can i remove the Zagg's shield and apply it to the other phone

I only use the trackball for pseudo-Galaga.

That sucks, I guess I will wait after all, if they clean my phone and send it back to me and it's still gonna be prone to dust getting in there, I might as well wait a month or two so that there's more to clean.

Unfortunately, mine is engraved, so would they send me a phone to use while I'm waiting for mine to be fixed? Anyone know?

you're a troll. i don't believe for a second that you even HAVE a n1. iyou stated in numerous other threads how you had an iphone that you wouldn't give up.

i had two blackberrys, a 83xx and a Javelin, obv used the trackball extensively on both. the trackball itself had issues. it would get gunked up the way that old mice would, and require that i take it apart and clean it, and the stuff that i would pull out was NASTY. just gobs of the crap that you don't realize is all over your fingers. in spite of this, i NEVER had any dust under my screens in EITHER blackberry.

until you show us DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE from a REPUTABLE SOURCE showing that someone has PROVEN that that is how the dust particles are entering. this doesn't mean some other person posted a blog about it, or you saw it in a thread on another forum. reputable means engadget, phonescoop, slashdot, or hell, maybe you can dig up a watermarked inter-company memo from google to HTC. your theory is just that, a theory, and honestly, not a very good one at that, given that unlike the blackberrys, the trackball isn't located within the glass housing, and dust wouldn't have a direct route up to the screen from there.

until you can offer up something other than your good word, which via a forum where you've been trolling around harrassing people and acting like you know about a phone that you don't even own means nothing, your arguments hold no water here unless you can put something real behind them.

Can't speak to the Zagg issue but it sounds like the reps are telling everybody that they are getting NEW phones. Albeit without any extras meaning you are getting from them exactly what you are giving them. Some are skeptical that we are actually getting new phones and I personally am guessing that they are refurbs but who knows. I really don't care as long as it doesn't have any issues.

yeah i think they are mostly refurbished; i think i'll wait few more months and hopefully they'll get this issue fixed before i try to get a swap

Picked up my replacement today. It certainly looks brand new so that's good. Not a single spec of dust under the screen. The volume rocker and power button seem to be fine just pressing them w/o powering up the unit.

However, when I press around the edges I am still hearing that clicking sound in certain spots. I read somewhere were someone took a hair dryer to the edges to heat up the seal and re-activate whatever compound they are using to seal it and then held it down with their fingers and I think they said the clicking noise stopped after that. I'm wondering if I should do something like that right off the bat. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If the adhesive is good quality, cured properly and designed to withstand any sort of reasonable heat level this should make no difference.

It occured to me that I can just try it out on my old unit first to see what happens. Of course I'll need to be careful I don't melt anything.

You'd like to think it could stand up to this treatment even if it achieved nothing...

I think it's bound to achieve something. Either:

A. the sealent will melt and the glass will fall out
B. heating up the phone with a hair dryer fries the electronics
C. the sealent will soften, the glass will seal properly and I will not
get any more dust under the screen
D. it will seal properly and I'll still get more dust under the screen
E. it won't seal properly

either way, I'll learn something! I just hope it's not A or B.

after you post your recipt i shall post mine sir.

ive had the dev for 3 days i have a great unit. not a thing wrong..... except the speck in the top right hand corner but nothing else is showing up. so i belive it was there since shipping..... but in between the bezel i do get small specs but i get em away right before they sneak in. if your guys units are like mine with that one small speck......... its not even an issue............i walk the city streets everyday with my phone and its exposed to loads of dust....... can help it at all....... now that i own the device i can say this is the minor of tyhe minor when it comes to issues. the real annoying thing is the placement of the soft key sensors.... but i got used to pressing upwards a bit.besides that i havent read nor experienced anything else severe besides the screen issue...... would rather not find that one out. and the phone heating up during charge.. but it stops when it gets around 80...... weird.......
but to that guy calling me a troll im sure your just some bum who ACTUALLY DOESNT own the phone. when you post your recipt mine will fly on up. your picking an argument. therefore your the troll.enjoy not knowing anything.

It's kinda weird that I have dust in every nook and cranny of this phone, e.g. between the screen and bezel, the screan covering the earpiece, the micro usb port, sometimes completely blocking the 3.5mm jack and I have to blow in there to get it out....I've got dust everywhere but under the screen. I bought my wife this phone and so far she's had the same results.

I know what you mean about those soft keys. I just got into the habit of swimping them instead of just pressing them. I start from the bottom and swipe up until I feel the haptic feedback. I don't even notice anymore.
