DVD Drives: Power Needs?

Just bought a USB-powered DVD drive - kind of figuring it wasn't going to work on either of my Notes.... but the brand was Samsung, and the user guide talked about changing between "Windows mode" and "Android mode"....

Suspicions confirmed. My 10.1 Note recognizes it, but then throws an error something like "Request for excessive power".

But my recollection of the Asus offerering for ten bucks more includes something called a "Y Cable"....

Could that be the ticket? Plug one branch of the cable into the Android device and the other into a power source?

Anybody been here?

That might work. If you get a USB wall charger to supply the power to one end and the other end of the Y to you tablet. It would be fairly cheap to try. If you try this let us know if it works.

I think, the DVD drive uses the fifth pin of the mini/ micro USB for to "tell" the tab that it's in 'Android Mode'. The same what a USB OTG cable does.

The big USB connectors of this Y-cable have only four pins, so without this fifth pin the tab won't get the "message".

The solution would be to use a USB OTG cable connected between the tab and the Y-cable.
Maybe worth to try if the Y-cable alone would not work ;)

Edit:
BTW, if you haven't a USB OTG cable yet, you might look for someting like "USB OTG cable with power supply". It should be a USB OTG cable as Y-cable. But not this one for the SGS3 phone.
