Root DVD format for ally

Can anyone tell me what settings to use to put an avi file on my Ally so I can watch it? I know it has to be mp4, but when i converted it with Handbrake, it comes up as unplayable on my ally. Any help would be appreciated. I know I cant change the size(its 720 x 304), so I'll have bars top and bottom, but I just want it to play. Thanks!

D*mn...just realized I posted this in the root thread instead of regular Ally thread...Can a Mod move this for me? Thanks!

I use DVD Ripper to convert my DVD's\movies to my Ally. The settings I use in DVD Ripper are:

Video:
Codec - xvid
Size - original unless the video is larger than 720x480
Bitrate - varies, but I typically use 640. Nice balance between file size and quality
Frame Rate - original (which is 29.97 fps for every movie i've done so far)

Audio:
Codec - aac
Sample - 48000
Bitrate - 96000
Channels - Stereo

I've never used Handbrake so I don't know if these options are available to you, but that's what I use to convert movies.

can both of you tell me which programs you used and where to find them? also, where to find the xvid encoder. i have OJOsoft but it only does MPEG4 (divx/xvid compatible) as a codec, not xvid outright. thanks!

also, what container do you use?? avi? mp4? mpeg?? If i can rip the dvd's myself with this software, do you know of a free encoder that will do those parameters?

i used "sothink video converter" should be able to find it with google search. after you add source file, where it says encoding profile, use the drop down to select generic mobile phone video, then generic mobile phone video(*.mp4). after that is selected, pick the output size...cant go bigger than 640x480, but if you have a full screen video(as opposed to widescreen), it'll fill the screen

i've tried to encode mp4 videos and the audio and video keep getting out of sync.

I had a similar problem trying to convert my movies. On my PC, the audio and video sync'd perfectly. On the phone, they were not in sync. From what I gathered after getting it to work right was that I was using settings that were to high for the Ally's CPU to handle. After I lowered my video and audio bitrates, I was able to get everything to sync up.

I also noticed if I fast forwarded through a movie without pausing first, the audio and video would be out of line again even after I changed my settings. So now when I want to skip ahead in the movie, I make sure to pause first.
