E-Bikes

I rode today but it wasn't pleasant. There was a stiff North wind blowing early this morning and it got worse as it warmed up. I made two trips to the town South and then rode around in town. I depleted a fully charged battery after riding only 39 miles. I did not step up the assist. The extra battery drain was just trying to battle the wind. I saw nobody riding today. Though today wasn't fun, it was likely a better day than tomorrow. The forecast has the overnight low in the low forties and tomorrow's high in the upper sixties.

I got a late start mowing today because of it being cold. My son came over before I went riding and spent most of the afternoon visiting. It was after dinner before I had a chance to ride so it was a short outing. It was in the low fifties but luckily there was only a mild wind blowing from the North. I only managed one loop to the town South and back and it was nearly dark. I'm not ready for winter riding! The overnight low is predicted to be only 31°. Bummer! It will be cold riding tomorrow.

It was colder today but didn't really feel like it. There was no wind blowing and a full blue sky of sunshine. I finished my work and logged 21 miles. I passed one cyclist in my ride today. The only person out this afternoon besides myself.

Okay, it was too windy to ride today. I almost had my seventy pound bike blown out from under me a few times today. It was darn windy when I went riding but just terrible before I got home. I only rode 24 miles and quit. My weather station logged a 41.2 mph gust while I was riding. That was the max gust. I have no idea how many were almost that powerful. I'm guessing at least three more gusts. :) Oddly, I was the only one out riding today. :)

It was windy again today but nothing like yesterday. The highest gust recorded on my station was 34.2 mph and happened after I got back. It was windy however which really drains the battery. I only logged 36 miles and thought it best to quit. I had planned on riding again early evening but I had all the wind I wanted. As soon as the sun went down, the temperature dropped ten degrees and the winds became calm.

There was a breeze today but nothing to complain about. It almost reached eighty degrees in the afternoon after the morning sixties. It was a very desirable day to be on a bicycle. With wind predicted for tomorrow and rain for Monday, I did my best to ride all I could. I logged 82 miles today which may be a personal record. I'm pretty certain it's an E-bike record but I might have logged more than that on my road bike back in the 90's. Though the bike had an odometer, I never gave it much attention.

I didn't see anyone riding this morning. It was a bit cool. I only saw a jogger and a couple of dog walkers on my first battery. I came home when it was nearing depletion and hydrated and relaxed a bit before grabbing the other battery and riding again. It was super nice my second ride and there were riders besides myself out enjoying the day. I saw only one other e-bike.

A quick note about today's ride. It was nice and I saw quite a few riders. I saw four riders in a pack. I saw a middle aged woman on a trike riding into the wind and up hill at 5 mph. That's quite a clip considering the difficulty pedaling a trike. And last but something I haven't seen but a few times around here, two young women riding on a bicycle built for two.

I guess I best get accustomed to riding in the wind. It has been blowing some daily and often to an extreme. Today was one of those lousy days. I went ahead and rode a battery's worth and called it a day. Going into the heavy South wind on my way to the next town was no fun. It took a lot of shifting and slow riding to get up the hills into the wind. The return leg was easy. I tried not to use the throttle and I rode in assist level 2 the entire ride. I was trying to conserve battery. I have no idea how fast it would have drained without my efforts. I only got 41 miles out of my normal 50 mile charge. I talked to my buddy that bought my older bike. He said he just can't ride when it's really windy. It's too much labor and he lacks the air. I hope that improves for him over time. I was the only one riding today.

Today was a wonderful day for a ride. There was a West wind blowing that has very little effect on my normal loop. I rode 46 miles and ate dinner early so I could ride again before dark. My back tire felt a bit soft so I checked it and it was low. I aired it up and rode to the South end of town and checked it again. It had lost two pounds indicating a leak. I aired it up again and rode home. I only logged ten miles on my second ride but I did no walking. :) I pulled the wheel off of the bike and repaired the tube. It was the smallest hair like metal fiber that had penetrated my "flat preventing" tire and tube. I could not recommend these tires to anyone. They have a noise factor, they are heavy and consume about 2 miles every fully charged battery, they make the bike less responsive, and they have a harmonic vibration at 23 mph that vibrates me and the bike. And last but far from the least, they cost more than a traditional fat tire and are billed to cut down on flats. Not so!

I got in a great ride yesterday. It was a bit windy from the West but that doesn't have any effect on my South / North loop. I rode 49 miles on a charge and called it a day. Today started out cool but absolutely beautiful. The wind came up as the temperature warmed up and was near gale force by the time I was able to ride. I only rode 30 miles before I gave up. I hated to quit riding on such a warm afternoon but that South wind was a show stopper. I logged a 54.8 mph gust while riding. I talked to my buddy. He logged 11 miles this morning before it got windy.

I rode 31 miles today. I'm hoping the North wind will die down some and I'll ride a bit more before dark. I saw the trike lady again today. She's a trouper.
I broke the 9K mark this afternoon. That's like riding my bike from LA to New York then back to LA and then back to NY.

I was assigned honey-dos Saturday and didn't get in a ride. It was a nice day to be riding. Today was much the same weather wise. I was finishing up the first stage of my project and didn't get on the bike until noon. It had warmed into the low seventies by then and I rode 32 miles before I came home to watch some football. The trike lady was the only other cyclist I saw while riding.

Reading this thread in the AM is like getting my NY Times, love it and the updates, LOL

I enjoy sharing my passion for riding. I hope that someday I'll type something that will tempt someone to invest and share the joy of riding an e-bike. And if not a bike, a desire to spend some time outside enjoying the day. We have too little sunshine and fresh air in our lives.

I rode yesterday and today. I only logged 55 miles between the two days. It's been warm which makes for nice riding but it has been extremely windy. I'm talking blowing trees over windy. Max gust on my weather station today was 61.5 mph. It's still gusting into the low thirties with high wind alerts for the area. The wife said the news showed the wind had removed the roofs off of some apartments. Rain is forecasted for tomorrow that persuaded me to ride today.

I tried to get in a short ride between rains today. I got in a very short ride of two miles. :) I cross a four lane leaving my area of town every day. I can often cross without stopping but there are times like today where I needed to stop and wait for a safe window. As I sat parked almost against the curb a pickup turned onto the street and cut across my lane. I kept thinking they would see me but no... they headed right at me crossing the right lane so near the curb that I laid the bike down and rolled onto the sidewalk in a desperate escape. The driver missed running over my front tire and my left foot must have hit the side of her truck as I rolled off of the bike. I lost my left shoe and the toenail off of my big toe. I was bleeding down both legs but it doesn't take much for me to bleed. :) I assured the lady I was alright as she was in panic mode and thought she had run over me. I was hurting so I rearranged the brake lever and bell on the right handlebar and rode home. I'll survive but it was a reminder that you can't be too safe. The bike escaped serious damage as well. We will try riding again tomorrow.

I mowed my lawns, visited my doc, and shopped for a new kitchen faucet before I got to ride today. It was in the high fifties with a slight North wind so it wasn't perfect but doable riding. I logged 24 miles and called it a day. The sun was getting low in the sky, temps were dropping, and I wanted to make dinner before the tricksters came by. It was good to get in a ride and nobody tried to run over me. :)

Just glad you are fine and you weren't too badly hurt. ;)

Thanks Don. The night following the near accident was no fun. I had the typical pain associated with blood pooling under a nail. What little nail that remained on my toe turned black and gave me grief. I kept the foot elevated and the pain finally subsided around 4:30 so I could go to bed. Nothing serious for me or the bike so I'm happy.

I got in a good ride this afternoon. There was very little wind and temps were hovering around seventy degrees. I only saw one other rider which surprised me. I expected to see a few more with the decent weather and no school today.

It has rained since I last posted. Today there isn't any rain in the forecast but it is way wet. I hope to ride some this afternoon. It will be cool with a high in the mid fifties forecasted. Tomorrow I'm having cataract surgery and I might be cleared to ride the day following. I hope! I'm missing my bike time.

I talked to my buddy that bought my old RipCurrent S today. He is having problems with his controller and display cutting in and out. I've not been near the bike since I sold it but it's hard for me to believe it has a problem. I'm more inclined to think it's a battery connection problem at the battery or somewhere before the wiring gets to the display. I hope to get a look at it soon. They recently came out with a new colored display and he decided he would order one. He went to the Juiced bike site to find the bad news that they declared bankruptcy and have sold their name, patents, and remaining stock to an undisclosed buyer. There are horror stories of bike buyers that are hanging out with hopes to get their purchase or filing buyer disputes with their credit card co. etc. It's not pretty. I have no idea why the company fell apart after 15 years. I'm sure it will effect me with parts and such down the line. The controller and display could be replaced with anything that could handle 52v where most bikes are 48v. The hub motor can be replace by any hub motor. Brakes, gears, chain, and all of the basic bike stuff can be replaced easily. The battery is the biggest problem The bike and the battery are designed to fit together. If a battery quits, having it rebuilt with new cells would really be the only decent option. There is hope in the Juiced community that the new buyer will continue with current models and parts etc. Time will tell.

And not you know why they never or took forever to respond to you, that makes sense now.

Their financial problems were not known to me or even considered as the culprit for no communication. When I dealt with them in the past, they had a great staff that were not only helpful but were passionate about their bikes and were anxious to put you in the same mindset. After doing my diligent brake research it was obvious that my question reflected my lack of knowledge. Just about any pad will work with my bike.

It warmed into the the low to mid sixties today and I was able to log 30 miles. It sure felt good to be riding again. (my cataract surgery will be rescheduled)

My bike buddy came down and bought my spare controller. He is convinced that's the problem with his bike. It was raining again Friday so I went up to look at his bike. It might be a controller problem but I think it's more of a connection problem between battery and bike. I told him that I'd buy back the controller if it wasn't the problem.
It finally quit raining so I went riding today. It was cold and windy but at least it wasn't pouring. There wasn't anyone else out today. All of the riders, joggers, dog walkers, etc were warm at home. I logged 37 miles which depleted my battery. I didn't up the assist but half of those miles were riding into a very stiff South wind. I logged a 41.2 mph gust while I was out. It really wasn't fun fighting the weather but I was glad to get in the ride. Worse weather is still ahead.

It was in the low fifties when I went riding this morning. I rode my 21 mile loop and came home to watch the Chiefs play football. I saw nobody on my morning ride. After the game I went riding again. The temp had raised into the low to mid sixties and the wind had picked up some. It was pretty nice riding weather and I saw some riders and people out enjoying the day. I rode behind a guy on an e-bike for a mile or so. He wasn't pedaling... just riding. He stopped and turned around before I passed him. I'm guessing he was 12-14 years old. I found an unopened air chuck and pressure gauge on the road today. I searched it up on Amazon and sellers had the item listed from twenty two to twenty nine bucks. I would never buy this item but I'll put a quick coupler on it and put it in my shed. I rode by the item three times yesterday and twice today before I slowed down to see what it was.
I also stopped and offered assistance to a young man parked on the side of the road with his motorcycle. He had phoned a buddy to bring him some gas because he ran out. He had an interest in my bike so we discussed it a while before I headed on down the road. He was gone my next time around. I logged 54 miles today.
