E-Bikes

I had a birthday party to attend this morning so it was around one PM when I went riding. I rode a battery down and came home and made sure that after all the stopping I've done that my brakes weren't rubbing. I then grabbed another battery and rode a bit more before dinner and a couple of loops after dinner. Naturally, the North wind that I had been dealing with all day long pretty much quit blowing when I quite riding. I did see a number of cyclists out enjoying the day today. I saw what was likely a grandfather and grandson out for a ride. They looked to be having a great time. I also got a wave from a gal I see often that has always had me on ignore. She either finally decided that I'm trustworthy or she is confident enough to take a hand off of her handlebars. :) I've likely waved at her a dozen times this year. It's fun to be friendly!

This is garage sale weekend for my city. I'm about to go broke with all of the lemonade stands. :)
 
Garage sales are fun to go to, but actually being the seller of the "garage" not so much.
 
I rode by a guy that had his entire front yard full of crap. I don't know where he stores all of it but tonight he was putting it all somewhere. That's what I hate most about having a garage sale.
If I dig something out to sell, I don't ever want to see it again. I rode twice today logging 85 miles. Though I stocked up on lemonade funds I didn't see a single stand today. My first ride the weather was beautiful. It was in the upper seventies with zero wind. I drained a battery and came home, had a beer, and grabbed a fresh battery and rode again. The wind came up while I was relaxing at home and it became more windy as I rode through the second battery. I can understand why I was the only one riding this afternoon but I thought it was odd there wasn't anyone riding earlier. Their loss
 
I got my lawns mowed and went riding. I drained two batteries and logged 92 miles. I broke over 14K miles today. It took 18 days to ride 1,015 miles but one day I was completely rained out. The seventeen days I actually rode I averaged 59.7 miles per day. I saw a lot of walkers and a few on bikes today. One e-bike that a kid was riding and one that a serious adult rider was burning up the sidewalk with. I saw the young lady that waved again today and I saw two couples riding together and one had a kiddie trailer in tow. It was windy earlier in the day but it was perfect early evening and everyone was out enjoying the weather.
 
After mowing, I put on my bike clothes and went to the shed only to find I had a flat. At least it went flat at home this time. It was another staple. I wish I knew where I was picking those up and how they are still on the road after the eight inches of rain that's fallen recently. I patched the tube and have it sitting for a day or two inflated to check my repair. I put a new tube in the tire and I put a tire liner in as well. They are a hassle to install but they would most likely save me from the staple punctures. Nothing is going to stop the nails I've run over.

I had to cut my ride this afternoon short so I could smoke our dinner. I mowed my lawn and curbed my dumpsters while I cooked. We ate dinner and I went riding again. I logged 70 miles today. It was hot and humid today which might have been the reason there were so few people out. I saw one nice road bike and decked out rider flying down the sidewalk and one gal on an e-bike just cruising. A couple of joggers and a couple dog walkers were the only other people I saw today.
 
It was a little cooler today but still quite nice. It was windy and that was the likely culprit that kept everyone off of their bikes. I saw no riders while riding 78 miles today. With the aid of assist on an e-bike, a head wind can easily be compensated for. Today there was a substantial South wind so I put the bike in the third level of assist while riding South and then backed it down to the second level when going North. It's like cheating and I love it! :)
 
I didn't get to ride yesterday. It rained in the morning and I mowed wet grass all afternoon. My son was over for beers right after dinner so riding was trumped. I mowed my lawns today and I mowed the cabin property and went riding as soon as I got home. I drained a battery and then ate dinner and drained another. It was hot and humid today but there wasn't any wind. There will be many hotter days that are more miserable in the near future. There weren't many people out today but it was Friday. I had a great time. I was needing a good ride. I logged 87 miles.

My son was telling me that he and his wife rode some last weekend and his bike (same as my first bike) was having power problems. The display showed the battery was charged and functional but the motor wasn't working. The cadence and torque was just dead and so was the throttle. About the time he decided to go back home it all started working as it should. He said it did the same thing a month or so ago. I told him about the power problem I had when my first bike was new. After a lot of frustration and interaction with the Juiced tech support, it was determined that the electric connection to the left brake was stripped and wouldn't stay adjusted. By design, when the brake lever is pulled it cuts all motor power. The idea is to prevent the motor from continuing to push the bike while the brakes are on. My left lever was stripped and it would sometimes be out of adjustment enough that it would shut the motor off even though no brake was applied. I used thread tape on the screw in connection and it stayed correctly adjusted. My son left hoping his problem is similar.
 
It rained cats and dogs this morning. It didn't dry out enough to ride until the middle of the afternoon. I rode before and after dinner and only saw one other rider. They missed a very nice afternoon to ride. It was in the mid eighties without any wind. I took advantage and rode 75 miles. I've been seeing this snapping turtle now and then on my evening rides. I've named him Leonardo. Tonight I stopped to take his picture. I'd guess him to be around 16" in length. Google says Leonardo is between 15 and 20 years old.

It was a great day to ride. I started my ribs on the smoker and went riding. I saw a lot of people out this morning. A number of dad's with their kids and a couple of mom and dad with kiddos riding. It was fun to see them enjoying their time together. I saw Tim, the e-trike guy, a couple of times this morning. He basically rides the same loop as myself but in the opposite direction. He cuts through the town South instead of riding to the point were the two highways cross which adds about two miles to the loop. As the day progressed I saw fewer and fewer walking and riding. I rode again after dinner and saw nobody. I logged 125 miles today which is a new one day record for me. It took all three batteries. :)
 
It was hot, humid, and windy today. Between the three, it wasn't that much fun being outside today. I mowed my lawns and then went riding. It was three in the afternoon by the time I got the bike out. I guess it was the wind but whatever the reason, I ran out of battery before I rode my normal four loops. I came home and grabbed another battery and managed two more loops before I quit. I logged 65 miles. I met a rider headed North as I was going south on the sidewalk today. He was working hard at riding his bike and he was riding with the wind. I met him again after I finished that loop and was heading South again. He was just entering my city. He looked pooped and shocked to see me again.
Tonight I saw another family riding. Mom and pop and three kids riding in town together. Cool!
 
It rained all morning and evening yesterday to the tune of 4.54". I managed to mow most of my Tuesday schedule between the rains. I didn't get to do any riding. It was super wet this morning and I had another big limb down that I cut up. I mowed all afternoon and then went riding. I had a guy that made a last minute left turn in front of me onto a sand covered road. Naturally the intersection had sand on it. I slammed on my brakes and slid into the intersection and barely missed the rear of his vehicle as I laid the bike down and skidded to a stop. A guy pulled up and stopped right behind me to see if I was hurt. He said that he thought the guy saw him and decided he could cut across the traffic and never saw me. It didn't hurt my bike but knocked a few holes in me and my left foot is bruised and swollen.
I was watching the joker or I'd have been hit. If there wasn't sand on the surface I would have stopped without crashing. Your head has to be on a swivel when riding. I logged 40 miles and called it a day. It was getting late.
 
I had nothing but troubles yesterday and didn't get to ride. Today I worked on my mower and then we went patio furniture shopping. We then put what we bought together and then spent about the same amount of time cutting up the boxes. I ate dinner and went for a little ride. It was hot and humid and quite windy so I only rode 21 miles and called it a day. It felt good to ride some but it was miserable riding conditions and I was the only fool out in it.
 
Another hot humid and windy day today. I worked around the house this morning and then took off for a ride around noon. Two loops to the town South and I was pooped. I came home and enjoyed a beer with my feet up in the AC. I then went out and rode a couple more loops South and back. I logged 40 miles that weren't nearly as fun as I wanted them to be. :)
I'd tell you about all of the people I saw that were out enjoying the day but I didn't see anybody.
I plan to ride in the morning before it gets into the nineties. Wish me luck. It's supposed to be in the high seventies when I get up with a 20 mph wind from the South. Hotter and windier is the forecast as the day progresses. :mad:
 
I went riding this morning and was home before noon. I rode three loops to the town South but when I headed South the fourth loop I stopped, turned around, and rode a few more miles in town before heading home. The wind was getting progressively worse with each loop and number four was just more than I wanted. I did see one other rider on my first loop. I passed him while he was most likely in first gear on a traditional road bike. He was pedaling a hundred miles per hour and just barely moving forward up the steepest incline on the sidewalk and into the wind. Wind was likely under 15 mph at that time. I felt sorry for the guy.
 
I hauled all of my downed tree mess to the chip site this morning. I came home and loaded up my mowing equipment and went to work. It was another miserable day with high winds temp and humidity. I came home and worked on my backpack blower and then went riding. Rain was forecasted and the sky looked like it might rain so I rode mostly in town. I made the mistake of thinking the rain was missing my area and decided to do my normal loop South. Wrong choice. It started raining and pretty much soaked me before I got back home. It only rained .17" but that's a lot when riding a bike. :) It's been misting or lightly sprinkling since so I gave up riding some more. The wind has been zero since I got home. Talk about hurting my feelings. Hopefully it will be less windy tomorrow.
 
It was less windy today. The temperature still got into the mid 90s and the humidity in the mid 60% but the wind stayed below 20mph. After I finished mowing and cleaned up, I went riding. I used up one battery and came home and ate dinner. I went riding again early evening. It wasn't that pleasant out but it was better than it's been in a few days. I logged 75 miles and saw no other cyclists.
 
I went riding once I had my work done. The weather was pretty much the same as it's been so riding was not that pleasant. I rode my first battery down and then ate dinner. I went riding again this evening and it had cooled down and the wind had calmed some as well. It was actually pretty nice riding and I did see one other cyclist out enjoying a ride. I logged my 75 miles and called it a day.
 
I saw some cyclists out this morning. They were all home in the AC by the time I had my mowing done. I rode 40 miles and called it a day. It was hot and humid even though the predicted rain this afternoon never materialized. When I entered my miles in my log I looked back to today's date last year. I've ridden 10,323 miles since 6/26/24. That's over 28 miles a day average.
Averaging 20 mph that's 516 hours riding which is 64.5 eight hour days or over 12 40 hour work weeks on the bike. I need to get a life. 🤣
 
I mowed the cabin property today. The river had gotten out of it's banks and much of the lower part of the property had been under water at some point. Most of that grass didn't need mowed. It was afternoon by the time I got home. I got around and went riding. I only rode 31 miles and came home and fixed dinner. I hope to get in a good ride tomorrow but the wife is hinting at a this and that taking up most of my day. I'll ride if I can :)
 
I rode early this morning. It was pretty nice though humid. I did see some riders out this morning. I then did my honey-dos and weaseled out of going to one of her crony friend's retirement party. I went riding again instead. It was later in the afternoon and it was mostly miserable riding. There was a South wind blowing in the teens with temps in the mid 90's and humidity around 60%. My station said it felt like 103.5°. If not for the wind, it was melt down conditions. I saw zero people out this afternoon. I logged 71 miles between the two rides. I plan to ride again in the morning before it gets unhealthy hot. With some luck, I'll roll the odometer over the 15,000 mile mark tomorrow.
 
Today was just one of those lucky days. I went riding with this morning. I rode just as far as I could on the best battery I have. I kept an eye of the remaining battery but never once looked at the miles I rode of how close I might be getting to the 15,000 mile mark. When I put the bike up I was guessing I lacked two miles of hitting 15K. I took this picture.

It was nice this morning and I saw a few dog walkers and three cyclists. One rider I met was staring at the sidewalk in front of him and damn near ran me off into the field. I decided I'd ride again once I got my dinner started in the smoker. I rode two loops South and then came home and finished my cook, ate dinner, and then went riding again. I was anticipating another two loops out of the battery I was using earlier but I chickened out on loop #4 and cut across from one highway to the other on the only paved road between the two. I figured I'd burn off the last of the few miles left in the battery in town. I was pretty close to home when a sudden gust of cold air came from the East. It was the front line of a little storm cell. I beat it home and was in the house when it rained and hailed. I saw nobody walking or riding this afternoon. It was in the upper 90's and the humidity was ridiculous. I logged 89 miles today and was lucky to catch the odometer at exactly 15K and lucky not be in the storm that was mostly between my town and the town South. Reports of half dollar size hail along my bike route that I would have been on if not for being low on battery would have been no fun.
 
We had rains over night which brought in some cooler weather. It warmed up big time as the day went on but the wet grass was very slow to dry enough to mow this morning. By the time I got my lawns mowed it was dinner time. I rode 30 miles after dinner. It had cooled back down into the mid eighties and I saw a couple of other cyclists out. It was a very pleasant evening to be riding.
 
I rode again this evening. There was very little wind and it had cooled down making for some excellent riding conditions. I saw three other cyclists all riding conventional bikes. The dog walkers and joggers were all out enjoying the evening. I rode 42 miles and called it a night.
 
I'm like the dad or at least the second dad to most of my son's friends. I mow for one of his buddies mother and the kid is in town for the holiday. I saved her lawn for last today and once it was done we sat in the garage and drank a couple of beers and had a good visit. With that in mind, it was after dinner before I was able to ride. I rode 34 miles and called it a day.
 
Riding after dinner tonight I tried something new. I was just getting close to my town when I had a flat. It is always the back tire at about a thousand mile frequency. I changed my flat on the side of the road. It wasn't as difficult as I envisioned. I almost had everything I needed. All I lacked was a zip tie to secure the power cable to the hub motor to the frame. Just as I was getting done, a guy stopped and asked if I needed a lift into town. I told him he was just a little bit late but I sure was grateful all the same. I rode on into town and then rode another loop and called it a day. It was a nice night to ride but I only managed 22 miles.
