Help e mail attachments where are they going?

Please help me here sorry if I am being stupid.

I have received an email on my Optimus black P970 to my gmail with word and excel documents attached. When I try to open them it says "saved to SD card". Where have they gone? I cannot find them.

I have downloaded google docs and thought that would open them. I have now saved the docs 9 times! but where are they and how do I get them to open
