E-mail from 12/31/1969 ??

Welcome to the forums!

Mail like this is the usual result of a spammer or someone beyond completely lost in setting up their computer and email on their end.

The unix epoch time began on Jan 1, 1970, so the sender screwing up to that level takes real talent. :)

haha I didn't realize you need talent to screw something up XD

Hello, I am seeing same issue on new LGVS700 from VZW. Tech said it may be the email app and suggested "K9 email" did you try that or something else?

Its a problem with andorid reading the headers incorrectly, here is a copy of my header, all other clients read it correctly but not the droid, Ill try another email app.

I think the semicolon is throwing it off, you shoud check your headers and see if there is a weird char before the date, that seems to be the cause.

Hi gold rush,
I personally think that we are being hacked into. I just got 4 of them myself on my iPhone 4 email. As I was checking them they began to diss appear mysteriously. When I switched over to sent mail then back to new mail my only one lefts date changed back to 12/31/00. I recently changed my email
Password as my Facebook acct has been hacked into from 2 different locations. You can see if anyone
Is logged
Into your account from another location
Under settings/my devices. If someone is logged in from another location u cut them off from their session. Even after I changed my pAssword, the los Angeles one came back in 1 week. Sad but very true! Do you have any sacred info?
You may want to protect it...

Just to clarify, my Facebook was hacked in addition to my email acct. it's pretty easy for them to hack your email through wireless.

Yes my wife and I get this email on our phone from our pop3 server email. It does not show up on our computer or on roadrunners email server just the andraid phone. You cannot forward or reply. You cannot block it on the roadrunner server because it never shows up there just on the phone. Verizon has no clue on how to stop it. It is a phone issue to me not email pop3. I do not get this email in anyother place includeing ebay.

I wonder if you are setting your phone to delete mail from the server after downloading and that's why you don't see this elsewhere?

I don't think your Android mail client is inventing mail - I think that your other mail clients may be set to not show mail prior to a certain date or something like that.

I once had a similar spam, but after resetting my desktop mail to remove the spam filter, I scrolled all the way back in time - and I had the same older mail there as well.

If you're deleting mail on download, then perhaps try your web mail interface for roadrunner and see if the troublesome mail isn't still in your inbox, at the beginning.

So - I think the issue is we all need better spam filters, perhaps.

phones are set not to delete emails on server. only shows up on android phones not blackberry. never shows up on roadrunners server. never shows up on my 2 gmail accounts. it is very strange. can not reply or forward them. there is no email address to block.

The date shows up only no email that can be forworded or replyed to.

7:00 pm

thats it.

and verizon has no clue what to do at this time

roadrunner can't do anything because it does no show up on their server..........very strange. this is an android issue not anything else. BLACKBERRY does not have this problem with same email account.

I do know one thing I will never go to a Radio Shack after all the ads showing up on this site. It is a bit too much.

Wow, you must be really frustrated!

On the theory that it's not coming thru a server, I don't know of any malware that could be spoofing that - but obviously, I don't know everything. I might suggest a quick scan of your phone with Lookout, or Avast or the like, just to be safe, you can get those free in the Market and uninstall them if you don't like them.

What we really need here is access to the raw mail headers for these offensive messages. Few Android mail clients display that, and for those that do, the feature seems to come and go, from what I've just read. In your list of mail messages, try a long press and see if you can get "details" or anything like that.

If not, I'll track down a mail client that will allow you to see that info - if one exists, I'll find it. ;)

Please help me out with some info - what's your phone model and what email client are you using now?

Oh, and sorry about the ads - we're at about a million members, they help keep the lights on.

For the last week or so I've been getting e-mails dated 12/31/1969. There is no subject or body to message, just a blank e-mail. I just delete them. Anyone else having this happen ? Thanks

I get these as well. Other emails are normal except these. I get about 6 at a time, sometimes containing a message and other times they are blank. Took my phone in and was told that they are legit emails ... but can't possibly exist.

Well I had an LG Thrill and after having it for 8 months had to get another phone after 2 replacements went belly up also so now I have a Motorola ATRIX and that is when I started getting the 12/31/1969 dates and this isn't just one or two I get 8-10 a day but only when I retrieve my aol emails from my phone not my gmail and it's insurance ads credit card ads and many more but all are from people so I can't figure out why with this phone but not my old one that wasn't even a yr old I'm dumb founded what and why it's happening.

I have been receiving them for the past 6 months, up to 15 per day, on two different email accounts. I used to delete them and then starting opening them one by one, only to find out some of them were actual emails from my contact list. I have been told this is only a problem with Android phones/the android system. Now I check each one prior to deleting as I have missed some important messages because of that. Also, all of my emails are time stamped for 3:00pm

12/31/1969 is the Birth of UNIX thus 12/31/1969 = 0. its caused when your email app cant read your system date at the time it gets the email.
That's close, but not it.

1 January, 1970 at midnight is the beginning of the UNIX epoch. It's an arbitrary date and time that's pretty close to when AT&T UNIX was developed.

If you see a date of 31 December, 1969 that's an indication that either the time and date are unknown, corrupted, filled with nulls, or otherwise illegal to the UNIX operating system and its work-alikes.

When it comes to e-mail, a 1969 date is a pretty reliable indicator that it's spam.

so what is the fix?
If it's a legitimate file, e-mail etc. from someone you know, let them know that they should set their computer's real time clock to the correct time and date. But before you do that, make sure all of yours are set correctly. ;)

If it's from a spammer, just delete it.

This is how it shows up for me 1969-12-31
I used to get it in my email but I havent seen one for about 6 months, but now when I look at comments on Facebook there it is.....just a random date with no comments or anything. It is starting to get annoying not knowing what this means or what to do about it!

Is that there for the date of when that comment was made or for emails like when you received or sent that particular email?

If maybe you could describe the issue a little more then maybe we could better assist you.

As of right now I would suggest turning off the device, removing the battery, then re inserting and turning it back on.
