Help "E:signature verification failed" phone NOT rooted

Hi

New member here, let me know if I'm in the wrong place.

So I bought a HTC Desire about 10 months ago, and from the start have had a problem with updating.

When I try to update through settings->about phone->system software updates, I download the update, then when it tries to install I get something like:

a lot of text
E:Error in /sdcard/download/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5-2.29.405.2_releasedauh16jhok5cmdm6.zip
(Status 7)
installation aborted

And then if I choose "apply sdcard:update.zip" I get

install from sdcard...
finding update package...
opening update package...
verifying update package...
E:failed to open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
installation aborted

I have not done anything to the phone since I bought it, have not attempted to root it or anything. I couldn't be bothered dealing with it so I turned off auto-update and kind of left it until now.

My questions are, why is it doing this and what can I do? Will I be able to get around it if I root the phone (I'll then have to figure out what to do since I have no idea what I'm doing, so I'd prefer another solution). I've already factory reset it a couple of times.

Thanks

Welcome to Android Forums, tidyprophet. Thank you for joining us. :)

I'm wondering if you purchased the device from a third party or from a carrier store.

If it was from a third party, it's possible it was at one time rooted and could have the "s-off/on" setting remaining non-stock.

Hi

Thanks for the quick reply.

I bought it from Mobicity in Australia (I'm in Australia too), and I've never heard anyone else have this problem having bought it from this store. Actually I've read people have stated it's perfectly fine updating OTA from this store.

It was purchased unlocked, and I've got a feeling it's a UK model although I can't remember why.

If there is some "s-off/on" setting affecting this is it possible to change it?

It may have been debranded. This is the process of using an unbranded RUU (rom upgrade utility) and running it on a branded handset with a gold card in place.

The 2.29.405.5 ota never worked on any debranded handset so it could be this.

http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe

This is the full RUU. It's an .exe to run from a pc to replace everything. This does wipe your phone though so use mybackup pro or something to back everything up first.

If it says customer id error, it means you were branded and have not got a gold card. Otherwise it will run.

However, you can now go to HTCdev.com, then go to "kernel source" and "view downloads" and download the latest RUU for android 2.3 which was never released ota. This works on debranded devices without a gold card, and is better than 2.2

Oh thankyou so much!

I downloaded the latest RUU from HTCdev.com and am now running Android version 2.3.3, installed with no problems, just need to restore all my data now.

Thanks again
