Help Earbuds not working, weird symbol on status bar

So what does the symbol mean? I have a relatively old pair of sony earbuds, no sound is getting through but im sure the earbuds work. Any fix?

There's nothing in the aux jack? Have a look if there is some lint or something in there and give it a tap out or something. Did they used to work with the phone then stop?
That symbol is different to what mine shows though.

oh its plugged in, never used it on this phone but im sure it works
