Help Earplugs suddenly reduce volume

I have used the UrbanEars Medis earplugs for a couple of years. They never fall out when I cycle or run. They don't block out all sounds, which is nice when running or cycling in traffic. The bundled earplugs fall out after a few seconds.

The Medis earplugs have a microphone with a single button, which pauses music and answers calls. There are no volume buttons.

After a while of cycling, the music volume suddenly drops to mute. When I increase it with the volume button on the phone, it keeps dropping to mute. I suspect that something with the earplugs trigger the earplugs volume function. This was not a problem with my previous phone, an HTC Desire.

Is there a way to disable the earplugs volume buttons, either with an app or a well-hidden setting?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I miss my excercise earplugs!

Funny, this is the exact same issue that happened to me while working out today. I was watching a video and using the headphones that came with the phone... Ill be interested to see how many others have had this happen to them also or if anyone knows a solution.
