"Easy Tether" & "PDAnet" for tethering on Bionic..can Verizon tell you tether when using these apps?

Like the subject question asks. Can Verizon tell that we are Tethering using these Market apps?

I have unlimited (grandfathered) data on my Bionic.

Anyone know the correct answer on this?

Also, can (and has anyone) tether(ed) to a Moto Xoom from their Bionic?

Thanks!!

I don't think they can but at the same time they can tell when something is up (if that makes sense).

Example being i have been using a 3rd party app for free tether since i got my phone. Never ran into a problem using it. However i have also never crossed over 3gbs per month either. So even with unlimited data i am not what you would call a power user.

That being said people have been caught and lost their unlimited status from what i hear. But these are also the people that will use something along the lines of 100gbs of data every 12 days.

So basically i think you will be fine as long as you don't abuse it.

I agree with Chi-TownTx.
Even the guy who sold me the phone said that as long as you're careful with your use, the chance that verizon would notice, or care, is slim.

I used PDA net on my OG Droid for basic web surfing whenever I was at my Mom's house (no internet or wifi available), when I'm on my boat, or when I'm staying in a hotel that charges for web access (why is it that most economy hotel chains provide free web access and the pricier ones want you to pay?), I've never once had a problem or heard a peep from big red about it. That said, I was always careful with my use. Used it mostly to check e-mails, facebooking, and for some moderate web surfing. I'm not downloading music or movies or doing anything that would cause a high drain and I'm not using it to connect to the internet for hours at a time.

Just today, I connected my Bionic to my laptop via PdaNet and was able to simultaneously share the phone's 3G with my wife's i-pad via the bluetooth on the i-pad and the Bionic.

Chi-TownTx, what 3d party tethering app are you using?

Do wish I could find a wireless tethering/hotspot app that didn't require rooting the phone or send me to the "$30 pay here" page....

Coming from AT&T, they had a way to smack people tethering for free. I was using less than 2gb per month and I got hit with a notice. Not so sure with vzw.

I am rooted yet still use this paid app on my Charge for tethering. It works waaaay better than even the free tethers i can get for root.

HOWEVER......

This thing was designed to work with the Charge and Froyo. I don't own a Bionic so i am not sure if it will work with your phone. To the best of my knowledge it now works with GB and if you notice in the notes it has a list of other phones that have reported it working (like the Droid 3). Your best bet is to

USE THIS FIRST !!!!!!

It's a 24 hour free trial so it gives you a chance to play with it. Again i have had no problems with this app and can run it all day every day if i wanted too without a drop. But i own a Charge (which it was designed for) so DL the free trial first to see for yourself. You may get lucky since it's reported to work with the Droid 3.

Side Note: It comes with some widgets etc and a lot of people get confused on which icon to use and thus think it doesn't work because they click the wrong thing. Just make a shortcut to it on your home screen and enable it there. Very simple to use. Let me know if it works on the Bionic.

No luck!
I tried the free version of the WiFi Hotspot and when I tried to enable it it went to the verizon pay $30 here for tethering page. When I tried USB tether, it said it wasn't supported on my device.

I had trouble with my sgt10.1 but read somewhere it works if you set your confection to 3g only. I tried it and it worked. I wanna say three suggestion came from a xoom owner.

I use my sgt 10.1 with my Droid 2 Global and Bluetooth tethering, works perfect. With my Droid being ready for an free upgrade I was considering the Bionic thinking tethering with LTE would be cool. I have the old unlimited plan. Now reading your post, that you have to switch down to 3g, I wonder if that makes still sense.
Any comments?

I don't think they can but at the same time they can tell when something is up (if that makes sense).

The amount of BAD information is astounding for this being a technical forum. Verizon can most definitely tell if someone is tethering. Period. I am a network engineer for a large school district, and I also managed the wireless network. Tracking HTML requests to multiple devices is easy. The real question becomes, does verizon want to spend the resources to catch a few offenders. I would bet not. But there is no way to know for sure. It is still a gamble.
