hey i recently heard that they have released the eclair update for the htc hero. i was wondering though, if i do the update will it erase everything on my phone? even the apps? will i still be able to redownload the apps i bought through the marketplace?>

Yes. They are stored on your Google account.

I root and usually upgrade to the latest ROM which comes out about once every 2 weeks forcing me to wipe everything and flash it.

If you want, you can get Titanium Backup which backs up apps for you.

My bad. Thank you. Yeah it was included with my rom and recommended for app backup. I never use it, just redownload it all from the market as all my apps are saved on my gmail account.

Root is like the equivalent of jailbreaking (or rom upgrades on WinMo). It gives you administrator privileges on your phone. Opens up a whole new world (though voids your warranty, there is a way to unroot however).

As a result of root, you potentially can:
-Remove manufacturer/carrier bloatware
-Install custom ROMs (or upgrade to a later version of Android if there are developers working on it. Some ROMs even allow you to move apps to sd card)
-Theme your phone however you want
-Enable wi-fi tethering either using Barnacle WiFi Tether or android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code

And many many more other things you can do.
