Root Effect of ZV8 OTA on root

So, just out of curiosity and to clarify some confusion. I decided to reflash my nandroid of Stock/Rooted ZV7 and take the ZV8 update.

For the folks who have ZV7 based roms with root and an unlocked bootloader.

You shouldn't have any issues from the ZV8 OTA as the OTA fails to install from within CWM. I'm curious if anyone's actually taken the OTA from within a rom/kang and had it cause an issue.

Hopefully this stops some of the questions about what the OTA did to folks.

I would have posted this in one of the threads, but its not rom/kang specific.

Also, there are no issues running the ICS root or pwnage tool on zv8.

Yeah usually CWM stops any OTA update (from pass experiences), if you were just rooted and took the update you will lose root, but you can re-root with the tool with no problem.
Stockish ROM with the stock build.prop will trigger the OTA since the OTA looks at build.prop info to decide if it is necessary, so ROMs with build.props that contain 4.1.2 or newer will not trigger the OTA. :D

Yeah, There's just a lot of confusion from some newer folks with stock based roms. I wanted to test to make sure that it would stop the flash and make a post that clearly stated that the OTA wouldn't re-lock the bootloader.

Good idea. :five:

Hey, quick question about getting ZV8...I'm running CM10.1 nightlies, and tried to flash playfulgod's SOTARD.zip stock/rooted/deodexed ROM to get the OTA. When the phone rebooted, CWM stopped the update. I see this was noted in a previous post, but the author seems to refer to those who don't want ZV8. I also tried restoring my stock nandroid, but that didn't work. Does all this mean I need to remove CWM to get the update? If so, what is the safest way to go about this? If possible, I'd really like to avoid flashing the .cab. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You won't be able to take the update without stock recovery as far as I know. Unless you know someone who has an image of the stock recovery.

Your best bet is probably to just cab flash v8.

Unless there's an image of it floating around somewhere already.

If you're already running CM10.1, why would you want to downgrade to stock ICS?

I thought that by downgrading is be able to take the zv8 ota... I've seen some posts around here reporting better battery life compared to zv7. I'm loving cm, especially with the official support, so I'd definitely go back to it after rerooting.

Use the pwnage tool to restore stock recovery and you can take the ota. Of course, you MUST ensure all stock system apps are installed, or the ota will fail.

Good info. I didn't realize that the tool restored Eyck recovery

Having the bootloader unlocked won't affect the OTA?? I thought I remembered reading a post a while back when we were dealing with getting the ZV7 OTA where someone was looking for a stock v7 nandroid, but they were told it wouldn't really be stock because of the unlocked bootloader. These 2 things could be unrelated, I just wanted to pose the question as to wether or not an unlocked bootloader will still allow you to take the ZV8 OTA. If there are reports of better battery, I would love to take it because I had to stop running CM and AOKP because of how quickly my battery would drain. Thanks!

I can't really see how you would get better battery on stock. Think the v8 ota was just to remove some apps and unneeded bloat.

And apps that are ICS compatible too, apps that are not will cause it to fail also.

I am just rooted and stock and saw 30 to 40% more battery life with the ZV8 update.
SO it did make some difference.
Contemplated running CM or AOKP but both have little kirks that keep me from them (bluetooth dropping, battery drain, use to be GPS), past experiences with CM, it was always clunky (in software terms -- it means to not run smoothly or has little glitches) and breaking often, often enough to be annoying, why I stuck with pure AOSP custom ROMs and from a good source. My $.02

Yeah. It should have better life over v7 stock because of the boat being removed.
I just can't see it beating the life of cm or aokp.
