Email app keeping all deleted e-mails - not keeping sync'd

My dad's phone is running Android 2.3.5.

He uses a Hotmail address.

If he:
  1. Downloads the e-mails on his phone, then
  2. Deletes an e-mail via. the website (mail.live.co.uk)
... the deleted e-mails doesn't disappear from his phone in the Email app.

This means he now has 500+ e-mails in the app when there are only around 50 in his inbox.

Any idea how this can be solved?

I have a similar problem:
Read/Delete emails on phone and the emails still appear (as unread in Inbox) when signing in on PC

This happened on my old iPhone too, when using the stock email app (I don't recall the exact problem but it was something to do with iPhone not being very compatible with POP3 accounts). I solved that problem by downloading a hotmail app.

On my new Samsung S2X I downloaded the Hotmail+Seven app and had the same problem - read emails on phone but they still show up as new/unread on PC. Uninstalled that app and am trying to work it with the stock email app.

Any suggestions, in plain-ish english, on how to make this work better? I don't understand the difference between PUSH and FETCH and possibly thats a problem??

I installed the Hotmail+Seven app (again) and it seems to be working this time - phew!

I moved some current emails into folders and this was reflected in my account when I logged in on my PC almost immediately!! Finally YAY!
