I get a sound notification for email but not a red circle on the icon

Not knowing the phone and email app in question... if it was working once and not at the present time.... You might try powering off your phone, remove the battery for a minute, replace battery and reboot. This process will cause the phone to hard reboot which will often clear silly nagging problems such as you describe. Best of luck
