email keeps searching

I have a Razr Maxx using Optimum for email. When I press the two semicircular arrows on the upper right side to load new email, the spinning circle continues to spin at times for as long as an hour. Is there a way to stop this. On my old Droid Incredible there was a button to push to have the email search stop. Thanks in advance for any help.

Mine has done this to from time to time. What I have done, is to press and hold the home key until the running applications thumb nails comes up and just swipe left or right to close the application.
