email notification sound

[Android Question]

I have a Samsung Galaxy Fame on O2 and cannot get rid of the sound every time an email notification comes through - it is most aggravating!!
Any suggestions as I have tried all the obvious

If you're using the app named email, Menu/Settings/Account settings. Select the account.

Either turn off Email notifications (which turns off the notification in the notification pulldown too, or create a sound file of silence (you can use Audacity, create a new file and export it as an mp3), and use that as the ringtone for email. (Name it silence.)

The Gmail app works about the same way.
