how can I turn this off, it is driving me nuts.
I believe you have to set the "silent ringtone" in the settings > sounds menu:
Settings/Sound/Notification Ringtone/Silent.
Gmail has it's own menu for that: just select "silent" in the Gmail menu.

I finally got it, I always for get about that dam menu button that opens up the setting, it was right there. thanx for the reply.
