Help Email on DX

I'm hoping someone can help me with my DX work email issues.

We use smartermail 5.5 with Outlook for emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, etc... The guys with Storm 2s don't seem to have an issue getting contacts, calendars, and tasks on their phone but I can't find an elegant solution for the DX.

I use google calendar sync but that only works when my office PC is on. Tried Funambol, Roadsync, and Touchdown. Roadsync and Touchdown don't work cos we're not actually using exchange. Funambol seems like a lot of work for this small issue.
I get email via imap, but the calendar and contacts issues are really bothersome. Does anyone have a setup that works?

According to the Smartertools web site, Smartermail does offer an optional module to enable the Exchange activesync protocol. If this were installed and enabled on your Smartermail server then you'd be able to sync just like the crackberry users who, I believe, sync using the SyncML protocol.

Depending on the size of your company (and the number of connected users) it looks like pricing for this add-on is pretty reasonable. Their pricing page indicates Exchange ActiveSync for 25 users costs $199 per year.

Our IT department is not interested in that solution as of now. I'll just have to use google calendar sync for now.

A follow up question if I may. I can't send/receive emails over wifi. I've tried on 2.1 and 2.2 with k9, maildroid and the stock email app. Can you help me out?
