Help Email problems

Since moving from a Blackberry where emails were a delight to use, to the Desire HD where they seem to be a nightmare can anyone shed any light on these issues.

1. Emails (pop) seem to disappear from the server if deleted from the device, there does not seem to be an option to "leave the msgs on server" in the device.

2. Now and again all emails just disappear from the device.

3. Is it possible to set up new folders to save emails on the device? (BB can do this)

I have 4 email accounts set up, all pop, which are very important for when I am travelling and if the HD cannot match a Blackberry it I may have to go back to the BB. Unfortunate because the HD does so much more than a BB. :o

Any advice appreciated if anyone can help, thanks

Reply from HTC support, well thats what they call themselves!
With POP3 it grabs the email from the server and stores it on the phone so it will then delete it from the server.

With regards to your emails being deleted randomly have you downloaded any 3rd pary apps from the market place recently ?

I'm not one to replace stock apps with third party ones from the market, but there are two that I highly recommend:

For email, get K9. It has the option you want to not delete emails from the server, it doesnt randomly delete your emails, and the reason I switched, it allows you to have multiple folders for one account.
You may struggle at first with setting it up just right, but once you do, its great

Also, you didnt ask, but I'm going to tell you anyway, for internet browsing, get Dolphin HD. Its just better in every way

Looked on the "Market but K9 is not there, where do I get it from? Thanks

Another response from HTC, says all phones use pop3 and will delete from the server, personally I don't believe them, my BB did not do it and I don't think the iphone does it. The handset would be of no use to business people if all emails were deleted when accessed on the move. A big problem for HTC, they would never compete with the BB.

The reply is a bit long winded but is below if people may find its contents interesting.

"Thank you for contacting HTC,

I understand its anoying but POP3 is used on most phones

The Post Office Protocol - Version 3 (POP3) is intended to permit a workstation to dynamically access a maildrop on a server host in a useful fashion. Usually, this means that the POP3 protocol is used to allow a workstation to retrieve mail that the server is holding for it.
POP3 is not intended to provide extensive manipulation operations of mail on the server; normally, mail is downloaded and then deleted. A more advanced (and complex) protocol, IMAP4, is discussed in [RFC1730].

POP (Post Office Protocol) mail client programs (e.g., Eudora, Netscape Communicator, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Outlook) allow you to retrieve your e-mail from the central server to your local computer. When someone sends you an e-mail message, the message is received, processed and stored in your mail file on the central mail server (for most this is slate).
You can access your e-mail: 1) locally by logging onto the mail server and using a mail client program (e.g., "pine" or "elm"); or 2) remotely by using a POP/IMAP client program. With a POP client your e-mail is copied/retrieved from the mail server to a local computer. With an IMAP client your e-mail is accessible remotely, but is stored and managed on the server. (A subset of POP e-mail client programs also function as IMAP clients. The advantages and disadvantages of POP vs IMAP are discussed in the "Electronic Mail Quick Reference" guide. IMAP configuration is discussed in the "IMAP Quick Reference" guide

1. There is a setting in the stock mail app "Delete mail on server -> Off".
So my DHD don't delete the mail on the the server.

2. And there is a setting in the stock mail app "Download options -> By days: All".
With that setting no mails are deleted on the DHD.

3. But set up a new folder in the stock mail app: Unfortunately, no :(

Harry there are no such options on my device and if there are why have HTC not told me about them ? Please let me know how I may find and set these options.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The mail setting:
1. Open mail app > Menu button > More > Settings > Send & Receive > Delete mail on server: clear tick box.
2. Open mail app > Menu button > More > Settings > Send & Receive > Download options > tick 'By days' and tick 'All'.

But that could be a matter of the version.
My DHD has Android 2.2.1 and Software number 1.72.403.3

Hope this is helpfully

Thanks again for that, I don't have those options in my stock email Android 2.2.1 Ver 1.75.161.2 guess they took it out.

I am going to try out the tip above and use K9 to see if that will help, unless I can use IMAP on the handset and that may leave messages on the server, does not solve the issue of them disappearing though. Thanks for trying for me. Much appreciated.

Hi took your advice and trying Dolphin and K9 found it eventually. However I am having problems trying to make new folders to save stuff, any tips or guides?

Thanks
