Who is your email provider? Some do not allow for POP3 setup (or they charge extra for it).

POP3 will allow you to download messages to your phone and make it so that deleting a message on the phone will not delete the corresponding message on the server.

My email providers are a combination of: Gmail, Google Apps (which behaves like Gmail), Comcast plus one other private server. I know the first three support POP and I think the private server does too.

How do I tell the Razr to use POP instead of IMAP?

Yes, there's a few different options for handling downloaded messages

On what exact screen are those options? I was not able to find them and the sales rep at the VZW store didn't see them either.

In the default mail client, long-press the account name and choose account settings. From that screen choose incoming settings and scroll to the bottom and make sure "delete email from server" is set to never.

I am not sure about the filtering. I don't think the default email client offers that but K-9 might.

when you set up the email account on the phone, you will tell it POP3 in the set up options
