Email Syncronisation for Galaxy S@ running ICS

When I power on my phone it automatically notifies my if I have any new emails. I would expect it to do this if I have syncronisation set to 'Push'. But it also does this if I have syncronisation set to 'Manual'.

This is a pain if I am on holiday and do not want to be notified of emails from an account.

Can anyone sugeest what I need to do to stop this

Have you tried turning sync off with your email?

If you mean the 'Accounts and Sync' option under settings (not within email). This is already set to 'off'.
