email vs text alers

Got a new ZTE score today, coming from a blackberry I'm not digging the touchy keyboard yet.

I enjoy getting alerts for a text but don't desire them for emails....can I make the phone not provide an alert for an email on a ZTE score?

Can i look at my screen and tell if a have a new text or email, or do i have to open the icons to be informed? enjoyed the indicator and flashing light my blackberry had

thanks.

You should be able to customise the notifications from your email app. Don't know what the stock app on the Score is like, but the app I use (Kaiten mail) lets me control whether I have an indication in the notification area or not, sound, vibrate, LED, and I'd expect these are pretty standard settings. If the built-in app doesn't do what you want, try another - that's the Android way :)

It is quite an adjustment. I would say it will take you a few weeks at least to get used to it. Also, there are alternate keyboards you can download. I personally use Thumb Keyboard. SwiftKey is another popular one.

You should be able to do that. Just go to the email app's settings and turn off the notification for that app.

The text message icon in the notification bar should be different than the email icon. They are similar, but not exactly the same.

I'm not sure about your particular phone. Many Android phones do have an LED indicator that lights up differently depending on the particular notification. Sometimes it is a different colour. Sometimes one type of indicator may flash for some notifications and be on solid for others. It is generally device specific. You'll have to test it out to see how different notifications differ in colour or other aspects.

still unable to separate email from text alerts / notifications.

On some phones, they look similar, with the email being a yellow envelope icon with an @ symbol, while text messages just look like the envelope. I am curious as to what you mean by "separate" them? If you pull down the notification bar, they will have separate entries, one for email and one for message. Or do you mean the ringtone? You want different ringtones?

Personally I use a different SMS app for various features as well as changing the icon of SMS messages to a green chat icon so its entirely dissimilar to the stock email icon which I prefer to use.

Thanks Chanchan, my goal is to be informed by a sound / alert when I get a text message but not when I get an email. Currently, if allowed, they both produce a sound although if alerts / sounds are turned on, it's turned on for both text and emails, not one without the other. Thanks.

The audio notification is being triggered by anything happening in your status bar, and currently texts and emails are triggering status bar notifications, so you need to turn off email status bar notifications. If using Gmail goto Settings, tap your account, and uncheck "Email Notifications". If using the Email app (which I don't use) it will be a very similar checkbox

You can change the notification sound in each of these apps separately. If you do not want your email notification to play a sound, go into the settings of your Mail/Gmail app. There should be a setting that lets you choose the notification sound. You can choose different sounds for it. If you want to not play a sound, choose the silence sound.

Edit: I originally could not see an option for changing Gmail ringtones, but have found it awkwardly in Settings, tap your account, Labels to notify, tap inbox, and there is an option

I do not use GMAIL, my only options with in the yahoo and hotmail settings are to either stop email status bar notifications but I do want to see that I have an email, I just don't want to hear about it. The other idea to select notification sound as "silent" is not an option as "silent" is not available. I might have to create a short silent MP3 and load it to be an optional sound.

Just use an unobtrusive sound, like a small pop. LOL. If you have Facebook Messenger installed, you can use the Facebook Pop ringtone. That thing is barely audible IMO

I cannot believe Google would code a way to silence ringtones in Gmail but not in Email. That's uncharacteristically sloppy, maybe their is an option just awkwardly buried

The apps that I use have the silent option when choosing a ring tone. It does look like that you would have to create your own MP3 sound file with a split second of silence and choose that one for those apps.

The Email app is not actually by Google AFAIK. Its manufacturer coded. The stock Email app on an HTC looks different and has different options than the one on a Samsung for example.
