Works for me. I can either click on an email address in "People" or just start typing their name in the "To:" field in GMail and it pops up the matches to allow me to select one.
I don't use the corporate email program on the Nexus 7 but I have used it on a phone and seem to remember it also used the contacts (now "People") in much the same way.
Go to People first,tap on the name of the person you want to email,it will then put that email address in the address bar of the email page automatically.
