Emergency settings & Amber Alert baloney on my phone!

For Nukes from North Korea to get here will take some time. Given their delivery capabilities: –
1) They will have to ship them on North Korean ships to the Florida Keys or some equally close location.
2) Transport (the ones that didn't sink enroute) by truck to their target designation.
3) Attempt to trigger them and to run like hell.

No worries here, at least from the North Koreans.
Plus keep in mind, Trump is already planning a wall all around North Korea.
That sounds as rational as Romans thinking that one man would never make the 26 mile run on foot to Marathon.. History recorded how that went down. The quickest way to get someone to prove or do something is to say that they cannot do so.. [emoji41] We may be in for a shock, unfortunately. Especially since they've already DONE something OUR scientists didn't think possible anytime soon.

Attitude would be different if it were your kid or younger sibling. You would probably want those alerts to be as loud as air raid sirens.

1) I was being facetious.

2) curious regarding your reference to what their scientists have done?

Well.. For example, they "miniaturized" a nuclear warhead from about the size of a VW to about the size of a sm microwave. That means less weight to carry, which can equal further distances than normal (once they get their rockets right) and/or doubling the payload for a normal sized ICBM.. Even the possibility of making the ICBMs smaller. Smaller rockets can also lead to..: ..need I go on? N.Korea is sitting on a serious game changer. And they know it. Still not catching on? Read some Nostradamus prophecy stuff and make comparison to modern news. Part of one of the quatrains speak of the leader of the 3rd world war will inherit his power through lineage, and each son being more twisted than the previous father.. There's a lot to consider and mr Kim fits the description.

You damn Str8! Agreed. Things change when you become a parent and even I learned that the hard way. Almost anyone who is a parent understands. [emoji41]

I wondered how long it would be, before the parent card was chucked into the thread
Thread's already been derailed enough anyway. LOL. parents, Kim Jong-un, Donald Trump, etc.

Always turn the amber alerts off. Too many times they came through at 3AM waking everyone up in the house.

Amber alert system said they would not do them past 11 PM anymore because people complained. The following week another one came through at 2 AM and that was it. No more. Had them off on all my phones.
Or you could just put your phone in airplane mode while you sleep. That way nothing and no one is able to disturb your sleep. That's what I do.

I might get flamed for this, but personally as a father, I like the idea of an Amber alert built into the phones. In situations such as this, the more individuals that are aware of the situation, the better. I don't disagree with Jack58 that an alert accompanied by shrinking alarms etc. etc. can be distracting, embarrassing and dangerous. But a silent alert, I am all for it.
No such thing as a silent alert... it is either all out or none at all.

It is enough to see it on the TV news, radio, online news, flashing led billboards over the freeways every few miles and in the newspapers. No need to blare it on your phones.

Has any of you who are for having this turned on your phone actually had your phone go off??? I didn't think so! It is LOUD with vibrations, flashing screens!! If it did go off in Church, Business meeting, while driving in heavy traffic on on corners, at a restaurant, 3am in the morning etc... you all would think different... extremely annoying, in some cases dangerous and embarrassing.

My phone has went off. Yes it is loud lol
Motorola give me the option of which alerts I want to get. I can choose, all, some, or none (except for presidential alerts).

It's not enough you had this rant 2 years ago? lol

Our phones both went off the other night. I was standing right next to mine. Scared the crap out of me!

Seems like we've had more Amber Alerts this year than ever, but I don't know if that's true. And they always seem to be runaways or some such thing. Almost getting to be the "boy who cried wolf" with me, at least.

But if my kid was missing, I'd be wanting an Amber Alert to be issued too.

The Presidential alerts are the same as how the President's Office (US) can immediately override television broadcasting in the US for an announcement as opposed to a typical scheduled announcement. That is what I am told. This is obviously rare and I don't recall it happening in my lifetime and I am surprised if anyone thought the inability to turn that off to be an issue.

AMBER alerts are intended for abducted children and while it's a nuisance, I'm not razzled by it. If I really do not want my phone to make any noise I always turn it off. When I'm at the theatre for example - I turn my phone off as silencing the phone doesn't turn off AMBER alerts. Once it happened a few times in a span of a day or two, but since then I haven't had one and it's been a few months. If you have a lot of these, you should tell your neighbors to stop kidnapping children.

That was a joke.

The other alert that I see are the Severe Weather alerts - again something I don't mind too much as startling as it may be. I do want to know if I am in a tornado watch or if there is flooding anticipated.

Also one thing I noticed. If it ever goes off while I'm in a public space, I am rarely the only one with a phone that went off. Usually I can hear several others go off too.

The main thing I trying to point out, is I don't like the fact that Verizon, AT&T and other carriers phones come pre-loaded with the Amber Alert turned on and when it goes off can scare the crap out of you or be dangerous in certain situations as I mentioned in last post. You should have the choice of turning it off or on. Not be hit with the surprise and shock when it goes off like that. I don't like the government interfering with everything, my phone included. I get it that some of you like the feature and "maybe" I would too if I didn't live right next to a major freeway where every few miles they show the Amber Alert on a flashing LED billboard and the fact that I watch a lot of TV and see it on the news AND I'm Online a lot and see the Amber Alerts there too. That is more than ENOUGH for me. ;)

Strange the Amber Alert seems to be only for kidnapped kids, which many of them are runaways, domestic disputes and false alarms (yes those are very common in Amber Alerts)? Why not about an armed robber that killed someone that is on the run or prison escapee or things like that? If that were the case, I more than likely would leave it on. Maybe.

We had a prisoner escape from the prison near my house and we received alerts about it.

If the phone came with it off, then people would never turn it on nor not even know enough about it to turn on - and it would defeat the purpose of having it in the first place. Leaving it on forces the user to actively be aware of it with the option to turn it off.

I've had it go off many times and while it's jarring, it certainly doesn't make me jump out of my shoes.
