Help emoji apps

Please. Help.

I have Samsung. Galaxy. Prevail. 2
4.1.2

I have attempted to download many emoji. Keyboard apps and all I keep getting when I send and receive messages. Are black boxes.

What am I doing wrong?

Sending emojis to people who don't have emoji apps. You aren't sending pictures, you're sending (non-readable, in the case of most emojis) text. Their app translates it to an emoji. (It's like a colon and a closed paren - they're just the characters : and ), but if you put them together, the forum software translates them to)
