Emoji

I think that the issue is that you have to use the new emoji.

Prior to this, you could just send :-) and that would turn into a smiley - and a lot of apps still send those. It just worked even if you just typed that out.

For whatever reason, Google has removed that support from the AOSP code base in KitKat.

So you have to use the new graphics. Not all apps have them and I have no idea (yet) how they would appear on an iPhone.

I've sent them to iPhone users and apparently they have some support for them as they have recognized what they were. Fortunately, they are standardized and are started to become adopted.

I see why they dropped the old smileys, as there are a wider range of Emoji's vs smileys and are actual characters, rather than interpreted, which can create issues in certain situations. Bigger issue is that not all phones, particularly older ones or non-smartphones support them as they are special characters.

They also look different from phone to phone. My M8 and Galaxy Nexus have the same Emoji's obviously, but they have a different art style. Maybe that's what the OP is talking about? In that case, I believe they are part of the ROM, not the keyboard.

Fwiw, if I go to an alternative sms app, the smileys get interpreted and displayed properly.

Personally I find the new emojis hideous but that's not the topic so I'll stop there.

I used TEXTRA when I had the MOTO G GPE.
I can troubleshoot/test w/this app & stock HTC messaging later tonight,if need be.

I haven't used that in a while!

Checking out - supports Sprint wifi mms - installing - customizing (no, dark does not save battery lol) - not bad!

Thanks, I'll roll with this for a while. :)

Well I'm using Textra now. So far I actually like it as opposed to GoSms or Handcent.

Me too, and I don't think it's even close. Over time the Handcent ui has gotten cluttered, and GoSMS started spamming me.

There's also a time code bug where most of them will display the wrong time on incoming messages with Sprint. Handcent used to know how to deal with that properly but lost it, Textra doesn't have the problem.
