Help Encryption taking too long

mariafio

Lurker
hi,
I have a samsung galaxy s4 that has been encrypting for nearly 3 hours is it normal? How much more time should i wait? Is it possible that i lose some data?

Welcome to AF, Maria :).

I've not post-encrypted a device before, but I can well imagine that it could take a while / some time...let it run since interrupting it would seem like a bad idea (i.e., don't reboot or power-off).

Did it say anything when you started the process?

thank you :)
i've been waiting for approx 7 hours now and still nothing... i think if i interrupt it i will loose some data :/

Is your S4 plugged-in (either to wall-charger or USB port) so that it's getting charged while this is going on?

Also, I wouldn't think this would matter, but is it still on the (Settings?) screen where you started this process (I'm guessing it's not giving you a progress/status bar, etc.)?

Maybe the process is actually sleeping/"dozing" and not making much progress because the device is in sleep mode (i.e., the screen is not on, etc.)...

Yes it is charging but i cant see any status bar or anything... I really don't know what to do

Quick question, Maria: how much data (pictures, videos, etc.) did you have on your device?

I guess what I'm asking is, could the encryption already be completed and you didn't notice it? (i.e., if you didn't have a lot to encrypt, it might have finished very quickly)

Or put another way, how do you know it's not done (what are you indicators, etc.)?

Did a little more research:

- You should be able to go into your Settings app -> Security -> Encryption section and see what it currently says about your device.

- This page indicates that when the encryption process completes, your device will reboot. Interrupting the process will likely cause you to have to factory reset.

- You should be presented with screen similar to this when the encryption starts:

Did you see this at the start?

Coincidentally, I too started encrypting the same device over night. Ten hours later, this morning I decided I'd had it and knocked the battery out the back. Upon trying to reboot I got a message saying encryption failed, factory reset device.

I know encryption is not done because the screen is showing the android symbol just like what you sent. And before encrypting i sent my phone to a company cause it wasnt working properly so they updated the software which means i dont have a lot of data. Also i cant go to settings because the screen stays white with the android symbol, it doesnt appear to be charging when i plug it into my laptop (no red light, not appearing on my computer...)

I guess im gonna do that. Did you lose data/did something change?

I'm re-downloading all my apps as I type this (yes, I lost data). I don't know about you, but my S4 was rooted. I suspect that's what caused the encryption to hang. All I wanted was root access without a custom recovery, hence my not making a nandroid backup. But, that's about to change. Good luck on your side.

after i clicked encryption It took Up to 3 Hours or less to open home sceen and when i look in settings its says not encrypted and when i reboot it its getting in a loop and not coming home. i think i should flash it again.
