Help Encryption Woes

Lurker
The recent update to the Pro added encryption for the whole device and the SD card. I enabled both, and my phone rebooted to apply the changes. I found some very troubling things afterward...Can anyone explain what happened or offer a solution? Thanks!

1) I have no idea how to view the actual phone contents on my computer, but I am able to mount my SD card as "removable storage" by plugging the phone into the computer. When I do, I see that all encrypted files on the card remain encrypted (unreadable by the computer) even when I've unlocked the phone with its password. Do I seriously just lose the ability to access my files from the computer because I have enabled encryption? How do I get my files off?

2) The files on the SD card (photos, for example) that were created BEFORE the update came are NOT encrypted! I can see the pictures I had before the update as clear as day on the computer, even with the phone locked or the SD card out of it. This is a huge disappointment. The phone didn't encrypt what was already on the card when I enabled encryption. How can I be sure that it DID encrypt what was in the phone's built-in memory? How can I put files onto the memory crd from my computer and then have the phone encrypt them automatically?

The lack of documentation with this update release is horrible. Any help is appreciated.
