Enders Game

El Presidente

Beware The Milky Pirate!
I watched the film on Netflix last night. Not great, but not rubbish either.

I'm quite intrigued by the story as a whole though and wouldn't mind delving a little deeper.

Are the other books worth a read? I notice the 2nd book takes place 3000 years after the first, is it worth skipping that and moving on to the direct sequel (I've no intention of reading the first book).

For once, UK Netflix 1 - US Netflix 0 :D

Ok, ta. I'll see where I can find them cheapest tonight.

I'll probably skip the book that's 3000 years in the future and go for the direct sequel.

Yeah, I'm no help because I read the books first. Got my initial read somewhere out of order, then went back read in the order written - really enjoyed it.

The movie will have ruined the surprise ending, but I don't think it did justice to the book. It condensed years of training into months, and left out a major plot point that will be important to understanding the sequels. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "direct sequel." The rest of the books that follow Ender take place hundreds of years in the future because Ender travels around at relativistic speed and doesn't age. I think maybe the Shadow saga (no longer following Ender directly) follows immediately after the first. But, I'm not sure because I haven't read those.

Re. direct sequel, from what I read, Speaker for the Dead takes places 3000 years in the future, whilst the next book, Xenocide was directly after the events of the first book?

How major a plot point are we talking?

I'm trying to remember how much the movie showed Ender playing the computer game. In the books, the game is meant to evaluate the mental health of the kids (they made them a lot older in the movie). Ender pushed the program further than anyone had ever anticipated, and the program adapted itself to him. That game still plays a big part in the sequels.

You'll probably be fine without reading the first book. I'm just on the "book is better than the movie" bandwagon with this one.

Speaker for the Dead takes place 3000 years in the future and changes the focus of the series quite a bit. Xenocide and Children of the Mind are sequels to Speaker for the Dead, and take place after that book.

As am I, I just struggle to read books/watch movies when I know exactly how the end works out. Reading the book would be a slog, just because I'd be constantly thinking "I know where this is going".

It's stupid, because I'll happily read a book/watch a movie twice

He played it a little, you found out it's how the aliens spoke to him and that's how he finds one of the queens. The book tell you more?

From my memory Xenocide takes place after Speaker for the Dead, though with a shorter gap.

Edit: Ah, should have real Italo's post first!

Didn't the movie omit the whole brother and sister manipulating world opinion plot thread that was in the book? Is that expanded on in the sequels?

El Presidente, it is such a large sub-plot that it might make reading the book that less of a chore for you!

Ender's Game and Speaker For The Dead won both the Hugo and Nebula awards when they came. I would highly recommend them both. Xenocide and Children of The Mind were good reads as well. If you want to know more about Bean then the Shadow books should be read next.
