Enough is Enough - 4.3

Virgin Mobile pushed the OTA to my phone, But I really do not want to install it after hearing all the horror stories and even recall of the 4.3 update. I don't know if they fixed it, and even what version they are rolling out.

So my question. Is there a way to permanently "Say No" to where it doesn't keep popping up and showing in the Notification bar?

When and even if the update is proven to be rectified of bugs, I will then manually check for the OTA.

I've always lived by if it works, Leave it alone...And my S3 is flawless and fast..for now.

If you're stock rooted...
For those of you out there looking to remove the update notification either because you have a custom rom or you don't like fixing what isn't broken, here's a step by step guide on how to remove update notifications and prevent them from returning:

Solution:
Step 1. Delete the update located in /cache/fota/ (may be /data/fota) and then click the update notification prompt to install it, it will instantly fail and the notification will disappear.
Step 2. Disable Otacerts.zip located in /etc/security by renaming it to otacerts.zip.bak
Step 3. Disable FotaClient.apk and FWUpgrade.apk by renaming with .bak extensions located in /system/app/
Step 4. Reboot

FWUpgrade.apk may be the only file you need to disable to prevent future notifications, but I disable all just in case.

Thanks to lorazoroth @xda for the tutorial.

I should also mention I'm completely stock. I mean this is ridiculous, Since I've posted this thread I've gotten the popup 5 times and it hasn't even been 2 hours.

You have to root in order to apply any of the above solutions as they're all in the system partition. But they do work. So I advise that you root and follow the above. Otherwise just keep pressing "cancel" or "remind me later." Lol. :D

I have it for boost. Works fine I have not had any issues. The only bug is it shows old download notifications that u can clear up simply by clearing the completed downloads. Also now the flashlight led will flash for texts and calls if u set it up

I have samsung galaxy s3 for vm. Not rooted pure
Stock. I got the OTA update to 4.3 and so far im loving it. And no issues or anything. Oh and it feels good to move app to sd card as well..=)

I just installed the update today, thinking "how buggy can it realllly be?"....

Well, my Gallery won't work anymore...thanks Samsung.

I can open pictures, but as soon as I hit the share button(for messages, dropbox, instagram, etc), it closes and "Unfortunately Gallery Has Stopped Working".

I'm pretty mad that they weren't able to fix a major flaw like that before releasing it to the public.

Settings/apps/manage apps...clear data and cache from your gallery and media server then reboot. That should fix you up.

I tried clearing the data and cache but didn't try rebooting earlier. I'll try that now. Thanks

Edit. Nope, didn't work. Guess I'll have to use quickpic from the play store.

There is a reason they make that 4.3 Update pop up every 5 friggin minutes..So you will only dismiss it a few thousand times before you submit to it..

And I did.

Here's my issue, Or question rather.

4.3 says it does an update with the camera app..ie. Silent shooting. However I have none of that. Still get the shutter sound on every snap. Am I missing something here?

Keep in mind "rooting" is not a big deal, it's not the same as flashing custom ROMs or all that scary stuff. It just gives you more access to the phone's features that only the developers usually have. You can leave it rooted (as I have done with my Triumph so I can delete the alog files periodically) or unroot when you're done accessing what you needed.

I remain hesitant to use custom ROMs and that stuff. You can root and unroot your phone and AFAIK it remains under warranty and I doubt VM would even know if you had to return it.

Other opinions please correct if I'm wrong. I am a rube at this stuff which is fine by me. I was also scared of "rooting" until I found how easy (and often vital to fix minor bugs) it us. Just download a terminal emulator app free from the play store, entered 2 lines of code and I was done. Tutorials all over this site. In a way I feel better because I'd feel as if I had little control over my phone without it (as you have with these damned updates you didn't want).

Has anyone with these bugs performed a factory reset after installing the 4.3 update?

Almost always a factory reset is required to work out bugs, fc's etc after accepting a big update like this if your pure stock.
