Root Epic 4g Touch doesn't boot, shows yellow triangle

Lurker
I had a Samsung Epic 4G touch running gingerbread and I wanted to try and install cyanogenmod 9.
I downloaded StockCWM-EL26 from StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5 and used odin 1.8.5 to install it.
Then I put teamhacksung_epic4gtouch-ota-eng.ALPHA3_1 on a fat32 card, put it in the phone, and rebooted. I know now that for some reason CWM did not install and I instead ended up trying to install teamhacksung_epic4gtouch-ota-eng.ALPHA3_1.zip from the samsung software (whatever its called) which failed and wiped the phone.
Now when it boots it just shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and nothing happens.
I successfully installed CWM-EL26 and downloaded update-cm-9-20120416-SNAPSHOT-epic4gtouch-alpha3-signed.zip In case the original file was faulty.
I also reformatted the SD card as Fat32 because I read someone had a problem and that fixed it.
I have tried installing both zips via CWM (wiping everything first every time) but they both give an assert error status 7. Im not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Suspicions: EL26 is not the right version? How could I tell? I cant boot the OS to look in the settings and see what version it is. Would it even matter if its not booting into the OS?
Not rooted: I rooted the stock OS before trying anything, but maybe somewhere along the line this became undone? Im not sure if this would matter either, or how to check.

Where are you getting this stuff? Search for epic 4g touch 1 click odin and work from there. The current ota version is el29

I have had a couple speed bumps in my rooting process. I haven't ever permanantly bricked my Epic, even when it won't load, you can return the device to ODIN (Downloading Mode) or Recovery mode.
